First run!
We have been working on my daughter's 68 step side. We had a few minor problems with getting the motor to fire but yesterday we over came them and she fired up for the first time. We tried 2 old start's my buddy had at his shop. Neither one would work. I bought a mini starter from O Reilly's and it was bad. Got the second one from them and still no start. We did some adjusting and figured out it was battery related.
Had a older battery and tried using it with no luck. Got another one out of a vehicle that ran but it died on us while trying to crank it. I pulled the battery out of the Ramp truck and it fired right up! Here is the first start of it. Hope to have the cab set by Thanksgiving maybe. Here are few pictures of the chassis & cab on the lift and the old LWB frame. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFq_F39i1cE

Great job.
I seen the video. I am glad you are adding the typed U tube link I had to look back to your older post to find the golf cart stuff on some of your earlier post / Cause my computer did not accept the earlier U tube post you shared. I'm all caught up on your u tube post now. Thanks for sharing. You are making fast progress of this. Nice. .

Thanks, I think it's gonna get slower now. I got a lot of welding to do and grinding. I have rockers and corners and such to repair. Did I mention I got a lot of grinding to do!

Re: First run!
Your engine must have a roller cam in it since your expert mechanic did not perform the cam break in immediately.

Re: First run!
Which makes it a hydraulic flat tappet cam.
Running it like that also makes it potentially a flat cam lobe cam. You can’t idle them like that on first start. Makes for rounded cam lobes. You might get lucky and have no damage or you’ll get to start over. Time will tell! I’m sure a dozen will come along and say I’m full of crap. Won’t hurt it. Another dozen might agree with me! But at least one thing might be good. Your super experienced engine guy will be happy to pick up the tab for the rebuild! |

I don't know if your right are wrong. But I know this man and he built my 307 TPI motor and we did it the same way and when I pulled it out almost 30 years later it was still running with over 250,000 miles on it so for what it's worth I go with him and his expertise. By the way he would pick up the tab if he thinks it's his fault. That's the kind of guy he is.

Re: First run!
If it works for you, go for it. All this is, a forum to share ideas and opinions. Thats all. If you want to debate from right and wrong maybe the forum needs its name changed.
We can debate professional engine builder vs a super dupper experienced mechanic.....debate engine break in. Do i support the way the engine was fired up. Who really cares if i do or not. It works for him. Last edited by YoungPup1977; 11-16-2019 at 10:26 AM. |

Re: First run!
To each their own regarding break in. We are firing up a fresh 331 Ford today with a flat tappet hydraulic cam and will run it for 30 minutes @ 2200 -2500 rpm.
We pre lube and use Brad Penn high zinc break in oil. I'm sure others get away with doing less or different but this is my opinion of the best way.......There's more than one way to skin a cat though |

Re: First run!
This video was done before we fired up the engine.
Notice we had 60lbs of oil pressure to the motor and I ran that drill like this until the drill motor went dead. So it pumped the oil all through the engine. The engine wasn't dry started. I would have thought since I'm in the Engine area I didn't have to state this, but I guess I was wrong. This is the 2nd engine I have helped him build and if it last's half as long as the first I'll be very happy! The first one had over 250,000 miles on it when I pulled it out for the LS swap. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nAYx06TUMQ

Re: First run!
Lifter rotation.
Lifters need to rotate to mate with the cam lobes. You need rpm for that. |

Re: First run!
And I forgot to mention splash.
The lifters and cam lobes are mostly lubed by oil splash. From the oil draining back to the valley and from the crank spinning. Not enough of that happening at idle to lube a new cam for breakin. |
