Herd immunity
Went to Home Depot this morning to pick up essential supplies.
Saw “old blue” pulling in ahead of me. Once inside I see the place is packed. I’ve never seen HD that busy. People didn’t seem concerned with distances. Perhaps I didn’t get the memo about practicing herd immunity. I didn’t see a single mask.. but I saw a lady pull a big bottle of sanitizer out of her front pocket and give a few pumps to the fella she was with. I don’t see that everyday either. Interesting times we live in.

Re: Herd immunity
Interesting times indeed.
I had people tell me to wear a mask. So I finally did. When I walked into the bank they hit the alarm and ducked. I was just trying to practice the safety rules.

Re: Herd immunity
Same thing here. I stopped at Menards to get a water filter and a light fixture the other day. I couldn't believe how busy it was. It was like Memorial day weekend busy. Folks must be trying to do home improvement projects while we are in social distancing mode.

I sent that picture to my wife and she said it was an improvement.

Re: Herd immunity
As a citizen concerned about public heath I changed my mask.
Unfortunately this one wasn't well received either. I don't get it. I thought we were supposed to wear masks.

Re: Herd immunity
Herd immunity is gained when people don't do what they are being asked to do by doing exactly what you describe. People should not be gathering in large groups. They get exposed, then expose others, lots get the virus and their bodies hopefully fight it off and the survivors have gained "herd Immunity" because their systems formed antibodies to fight it off. Unfortunately, their exposure to the virus allows them to bring it home with them and spread it to family members - hopefully none of whom are the most at risk - the aged, cancer patients, immuno supressed, heart problems, etc. etc. If I saw a parking lot full of cars, I would have turned around.

Re: Herd immunity
I’m probably more at risk with my wife being a nurse than I am walking through a crowded HD on a Sunday morning.
I was mostly being flippant about the herd immunity comment. There is so much conflicting data out there. Should people take precautions and be careful.? Absolutely. Is there fear mongering? Absolutely. I understand people have pre existing health issues and need to be very careful. Kansas is the 22nd state to enact the stay at home order. There are things that are still considered reasonable and “safe” to do. I have a feeling the people who are yelling stay at home the loudest can be found in HD,Walmart,Costco, Target and any other grocery store or gas station on any given day. I’m ok with that. Probably helps them vent their fears and frustration. Lastly I want say that this is not aimed at anything that you said rsavage.

Re: Herd immunity
For the most part around here Ive been seeing a lot of stores limiting the number of people into xyz store. Haven't been to home depot in a couple of weeks now so I don't know bout there.
I did go to an Ace hardware yesterday up in the mountains and they are taking this pretty seriously. Taped X's on the ground at the checkout, big plexiglass screen in front of the one cashier, only 3 people in the store at a time. No cash. Card only. On the way back, I took some cash out of my wallet to pay toll. Big freeway sign lit up saying "NO CASH ACCEPTED - WATCH YOUR MAIL FOR TOLL BILL". Least out here seems like people are starting to take it pretty serious.

Re: Herd immunity
My wife is also a nurse. It does cross your mind.
Fortunately my wife keeps me at least 6 feet away from her at all times.

Re: Herd immunity
That’s funny. Some days my wife wants more than 6 feet of distancing. she may want to measure the distancing in hours or days.

Re: Herd immunity
USA has a large amount of cases. Take it seriously and we can get back to our car shows and swap meets. I know you have large cities which do take a toll. Keep your distance. Here in B.C. Can. we have good stores to limit spacing except W mart which seems to be a free for all

And yes... you did! Weird thing for us now though. Since this whole thing started, mine wants to be closer than ever. I on the other hand have been wanting to move into the garage for fear of not knowing what Im bringing home from work. Definitely strange times.

Re: Herd immunity
I don't know how herd immunity could work on people. Where are their minds? Have they not yet let the seriousness of this situation sink in? This is as real as it gets. I don't freak out. I'm a keep it cool/what can we do to help type of guy. If there is anyone out there who hasn't grasped the severity of this deadly highly contagious virus with no known cure, WAKE UP NOW!
I hear about these boxes marked on the floor at convenience stores and such. But I go to the supermarket and they let people pile up at the register. I never go to convenience stores but I HAVE TO go to the grocery store every so many days. We are relying on one another to not spread this virus to one another. This is one thing that connects as all. No choice. This is how it is! https://www.wbaltv.com/article/coron...itive/31967142

Re: Herd immunity
Maybe the term needs to be defined...
[Herd immunity is ] "the resistance to the spread of a contagious disease within a population that results if a sufficiently high proportion of individuals are immune to the disease, especially through vaccination." https://www.google.com/search?client...=herd+immunity It has nothing to do with people avoiding the virus by staying away from each other or the failure to do so. |

Re: Herd immunity
My posting this thread was just about my observations. In part was to be flip, not to educate. (Everyone has google.)
I figure most know what’s going on in our world. I believe that the folks here are in tune and intelligent. Lots of different perspectives. It’s sad to click the links of people passing. I realize that it’s mostly done out of respect and a personal connection that’s not necessarily out of actually knowing the person/celebrity. I hope it’s not done out of making a point. I think I heard that for the first time in America’s history that there won’t be churches open for Easter. I’m not sure if that includes people who participate in Synagogues. My church has been doing online services...honestly I haven’t checked those out. Been occupying my mind in other ways. I got a call from a good friend this morning, who I have worked for his dad and then him and his sister for the last 22 years( I have a key to their store front) to tell me they’re closing their door. I had a hunch it was coming to that. I asked him if he was ok. He said he was ok and that he learned a lot from 2008. I have a side job tomorrow that is considered government housing that’ I ask them to sign a waiver. (There are people that need housing of course). I’ve never needed to do that in the past. I look forward to reading, responding and starting threads here because of the people here. I still have GM vehicles but sold my last 72 Chevy back on 10/30/19. It’s the old trucks that brought me here. You guys are my friends. I refuse to let my personal feelings whether political, religious or any other differences I may have with someone lead to disrespecting them. This is a time we all need to ban together. Prayers needed. “Keep hope alive” usually when I say that I’m being facetious( sorry Jesse Jackson) not today.

Re: Herd immunity
Wife came home Saturday after a run to Lowe's to pick up some plants. Figured staying in the garden center she could keep some distance and it not be crowded. WELL, a lady two folks in front of her in line proceeded to start chewing out the poor cashier for not giving her a cleaning wipe (he's not supposed to) and started yelling she was a nurse and cross contamination and something about reporting him. Reporting to whom is only one mystery here.
Wife said the lady wasted ten minutes of everyone's time and actually increased everyone's exposure due to the wasted time and goofy goo onlookers that had to come see the commotion. I told her I was glad I didn't go with her because I would have probably gotten arrested when I told the lady to get her crap and carry her *** on to her car. This is a serious issue but some folks are just looking for a place to be stupid.

Re: Herd immunity
Sometimes it gets to you. The stress can make one do and say things they might not ever say or do otherwise. Just look at the numbers of healthy looking people getting sick and dead in 48 hours. Young, middle and old age people. Health care professionals too. A nurse was interviewed on tv saying nurses are calling in scared to go to work. No one wants to die.
I pray your wife don't catch it. I'm sure you saw the story of the young Dr/intern in Jonesboro who was self quarantining himself from his wife and young son. Their home was destroyed in the tornado saturday. That just doesn't need to happen.

Re: Herd immunity
Sorry to be serious in a thread meant to not be, but the title and content have nothing to do with one another. Also, no, many people (judging from what I've read posted on the internet), have little understanding of what herd immunity is.

Re: Herd immunity
I made the mistake of going to Lowes Saturday to get some lacquer thinner ...it was unreal...ive never seen that placed with so many people in it..ever..probably well over 150 people in the store...they only had 2 registers open and about 25 people standing in line...people everwhere coughing, in close contact ...just like nothing was wrong...I just turned around and left...I didn't need it that bad anyway
