I prefer a straight axle 80 series, but this photo will have to do.

I hate Dayton wheels, but I agree on the 80 series.

The biggest problem I have with Dayton's is mechanically challenged people don't know how to mount them. My first C7500 dump truck had them, and I had no problem, but after I turned that gas burner with Dayton's over to employees, it went to hell in a handbasket. Nobody could drive carbureted rig.

Re: GM Semis

I was half joking, but the Dayton vs Budds debate is a lot like Chevy vs Ford. It is also mainly an East Coast - West Coast thing. Most trucks, from the old days anyway, on the West Coast had Budds where most on the East Coast had Daytons.

There are guys out there that hate Daytons, as you have stated, and love Budds and there are guys that hate Budds and love Daytons. I see most of this debate with the older Road Tractor guys more than anything.

I don't hate Budds, lol, but prefer Daytons.

The choke puzzled the young guys. They would pull it out and leave it, and try to drive it, and bring it back to the shop because it wouldn't run.

It had a two speed rear. Worked smooth as butter. They would bring it to the shop and say the rear end was out. They would get the two speed disengaged somehow couldn't get it back in gear.

It had hydro-boost brakes and steering. They called and said the brakes and steering were out. Well hell yeah, without fluid it wont stop or steer.

One day it wouldn't pull itself. I walked up to it and peaked over the drivers steer tire. Two plug wires were dangling in mid air.

I could go on and on.

My son in law runs this place now. The other day he said "I put another guy in a dump truck this morning." I said " So you hired another truck driver?" He said, "No, I hired a guy that can legally sit behind the steering wheel."

I guess we're just from the old school, lol.

I know what you mean about the Choke. I was at my real parts store years ago and I mentioned a "Hand Choke". One of the guys behind the counter said "What's a Hand Choke"?

He's closer to the middle, but west of the Mississippi. As I recall, a lot of trucks in AR had both

I figure the rest of that might have been, "It's a cable connected to the carb with a knob on the dash you pull out to close the choke and push in to open it back up once warm". "So what is a choke anyway?"

Re: GM Semis

I drove for over 40 years. I owned a butterfly hood 68 GMC single axle truck tractor with a 478 toro flow diesel. I also owned a 68 GMC with a 305 V6 and a 8 yard dump bed. Also drove a lot of dump trucks that had a 671 and roadranger. I can make a 13 speed really sing behind a turned up Detroit. The most fun was a GMC ten wheeler dump truck. It had a V6-92 that I ran the RPM screw up on and restricted the return line. 13 speed I could leave a cloud of black smoke that the vehicles behind me couldn't see the road. I drove a cab over fish bowl with a cunmmins pulled a low boy hauling heavy equiptment. at present I own a C 65 with a 366 working 5 speed and two speed rear . it has full air brakes and a air tag axle. I always ran two log books. Never had a accident in over a million miles. I wouldn't drive today with all the E log and stuff. There is a Guy on U tube Waylon Wire he has a V12 gas engine. He is building a 38 GMC truck with that engine and a road ranger trans on a stretched 65 one ton chassis.
