Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"

Well if you’re a crazy k20 enthusiast then this is like watching porn I’ll admit, and I do get alerts when new episodes are going to be released. Eric knew i bought this 7 seconds after I did which is a funny story in itself and a day later bought his brother

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"

After a day of curing in the garage, I had to put the woodgrain glovebox panel on top of the fresh Medium Blue lid and push the emblem on. It was the icing on the cake this morning. Super cool!

Good one Eric!

I got out in the garage early in the morning before work to shoot the top of the dash and the door tops with Dark Blue. I got everything wiped down and tack ragged and grabbed a can of 2K spray can paint I had mixed up when I purchased the paint. Shook it for 2 minutes, then put the red button on the bottom of the can, puncture the hardener bladder inside, and mixed it up for another 2 minutes. Put on my mask and did a test spot spray on cardboard and it was not the Dark Blue, it was Medium Blue. So I grabbed a different can I had in another box, and the same thing, Medium Blue again.
Took off my mask, cussed bit, and went back into the house frustrated with the situation.

After I calmed down a bit I started to think back when I had the 2K spray can mixed up at the same time I had the gallon color matched. Several months later I went back to get Dark Blue mixed into 2K can and must of taken the wrong can of paint without even checking. So I looked at the pot life of the can once it has the hardener blader punctured you have between 24 to 48 hours to us it before it goes hard in the can. So I decided last night I would shift gears and try to get use out of the two cans ready to go.

Back out in the garage early before again to wipe down the interior areas and get it masked off. Sprayed one light coat to get it to tack and introduce paint to primer. Then 2 more coats about 15 minutes a part.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"

I fabricated the bracket to bolt to the garage floor so I could pull trucks in from the driveway without using my back. The winch is from the gantry I built a few months ago. They both use a female receiver hitch and pin so I can use it for other purposes. When done using it, I unbolt it and screw in a few dome head bolts that fit flush to the concrete. Worked great pulling in the Devil Cowboy truck.

Here are the doors ready to go for a few coats of Dark Blue on the upper door frames. I will shoot these this afternoon or in the morning with the upper dash re-do in Dark Blue also.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"

I had one of my orders show up for a few items I needed for the doors and a few interior items to give it a fresh look. One of the items was a woodgrain gauge bezel. After pulling it out of the box, I knew it was not going to be a match. I grabbed the NOS woodgrain panel for the glove box and snapped a picture for comparison.

If anyone knows what 3m Di-Noc vinyl color or part number is the closest to the NOS color and pattern, please give a shout. I need to recover the gauge bezel and the door inserts to match glove box best we can.

If I can source it I have a full-size CNC machine with a tangential knife cutter that cuts vinyl, and also have the bezel CAD drawing to get a perfect cut.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"

I did some digging yesterday and found 2 different 3M Di-Noc woodgrain vinyls that I would like to see for comparison. I ordered 2 samples so I could lay them on the panels and see which way to go. It's probably a shot in the dark. These are just photos down below. I am sure the samples will look different than a web photo, need to see them in person.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"

Good luck on getting a match
This always presents problems with NOS and repop
The wood grain from the factory matched pretty well, but over time the GB door and bezel faded
Even the door panels could be a different shade
I've always mixed and matched to try and get as close as I can

How does the door panel inserts color compare to each of the dashboard pieces?
If they are dark like the Bezel, you could probably more easily find a repop GB panel that will be darker

The other problem with that adhesive stuff is, over time the heat and cold in the cab it tends to peel, which looks Worse than different shading

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"

I spent about two hours this morning taping off the truck to spray the dash, roof, and door tops with Dark Blue this afternoon. I will still need to drop down the spray curtains, set up the exhaust fan, and get everything wiped down and tack ragged before spraying.

I also got the two samples from 3M in the mail yesterday and it is a no-go on the match. I do have one other trick up my sleeve, but more about that later.

Will spend the rest of the day working on getting the motor degreased so I can get color on it in the next day or so.

Well thanks for the compliment, that means something coming from a guy who builds the nicest trucks on this forum.

I was looking at that option but have still not ruled it out. The wood veneer would be the easiest of my two ideas. Being that the wood veneer can be cut on one of my CNC machines with the existing CAD files I have. Then stain it and probably finish with a satin clear. Once done it would be fairly easy to install since it would be more rigid. The downside would be the door inserts, do not think it would be possible with the compound curves.

The other idea I had was to scan the glove box lid that is painted woodgrain. Then provide the glovebox, dash bezel, and door panel inserts CAD file to the local automotive wrap shop. Then they can print and cut all at the same time to exact fit. This process will work and will hold up over time if the proper vinyl is used. I used to live in Arizona and had this process done with all of the work trucks I owned and it held up well to that heat and sun. Installation would be a little bit more difficult but not impossible. The key is to use the proper application fluid while installing vinyl. I have always had good luck over the years with Rapid-Tac application fluid (see photo below). Cost about $9 on Amazon for a 4oz spray bottle.

The other detail is to match the sheen of the painted-on woodgrain. It has a more flat sheen to it. With vinyl that has been printed, there are different finish sprays used to get the sheen desired, and is also UV protectant and sealant. Back in the day we used a product called Frog Juice that sealed the printed vinyl, provided a UV protection, and gave the vinyl a high gloss finish. There are other brands available that have matte, semi, satin, etc.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"

Painting the Dark Blue top of the doors and roof has been pushed off until Friday. Lost a day somewhere and thought I had one more day until Turkey Day.

I did get some headway on cleaning the motor. Went a couple of rounds with Dollar Store oven cleaner. Then followed up with purple power and some scrubbing with hot water and Awesome cleaner from Home Depot. Hopefully another round or two and I will get it pushed out onto the driveway and power washed.

The motor is getting a couple of coats of engine ceramic primer, followed up with a few coats of engine ceramic black paint. Ordered new spark plugs, heat shields, an aluminum-finned dress-up kit, wire loom, and a few other goodies to freshen it up. I already purchased a few months ago a new set of cast ram horns, replaced the HEI cap and rotor, new belts and hoses. Also have the newly rebuilt TH350 transmission and rebuilt NP205 ready to bolt up.

Check out these hydroprinted wood grain patterns. A resto shop close to me made use of hydroprinted wood grain on a station wagon they are restoring: https://watertransferprinting.com/pr...lm/wood-grain/

Pete, thanks I will check out the water transfer woodgrain information. Hopefully, there will be a solution out there that will make everything go well with the glove box style
__________________________________________________________

I was able to get the Dark Blue color on this morning. It has been a long time coming and now I can't wait to pull the masking in the morning to see the reveal of the Medium Blue and Dark Blue together. The spray came out pretty good with minimal trash in the paint, which is to be expected when shooting in a DIY garage-style paint booth.

Now I can start with putting down the insulation Kilmat on the floor, behind the tank, under the headliner, and up the firewall. Next up will be shooting the radiator core support, inner fenders, and any miscellaneous items needed to get this cab and front sheet metal bolted back together.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"

I was out in the shop this morning stripping all the masking tape, paper, and plastic off the truck and doors. I am very happy with how it looks and a sense of satisfaction in my mind will help me stay motivated. After a couple more days I will knock down the dash with 5000 Trizact wet to give the upper dash more of a flat/satin finish, as well as reduce glare. If that looks too flat I will give it a coat of matte clear or can hit it with some polishing glaze.

Back into the garage to finish off the cleaning of the motor and get it into primer. A few of the items I ordered for the motor showed up last night and are waiting for the painted motor before I can install new parts.

Re: Super Cheyenne aka the "Devil Cowboy"

After 8 rounds of scrubbing with cleaner, rinsing, and scraping, the motor is finally in primer. Paint tomorrow, then start bolting on some of the new goodies.

Next up will be the transfer case crossmember and core support that need to be prepped and painted with satin black.

You guys have got me excited for these potential woodgrain solutions. I love it when science gets involved.
