Re: Cheap Tricks

I know we all have had problems with cooling system after filling a new engine or after changing a T-stat or water pump with getting the air out so what I do is drill a 1/8th hole in the flange of the T-Stat to help bleed the air out.

Brake fluid is great for stripping paint off of plastic parts.

A lot of t-stats come with a bleeder hole now. I never remember which manufacturers have it.

Use apeice of paper shop towl inside of sockets to hold nuts or bolts into sockets when putting them into tite or odd angle places. It keeps them from falling out.

Re: Cheap Tricks

You can check your tstat by putting it in a pan of water on the stove. Should open at whatever its temp is. Check the water temp with a meat thermometer.

If I have to check it, I'll replace it. They are too cheap to use a questionable one. Parts are cheap. Time is expensive. Save time, save money.

Re: Cheap Tricks

I picked up a 12v DeWalt drill from a garage sale with no battery.
I took it apart and ran wires from the metal tabs in the handle where the battery went. Wires are about 5 feet long and I put alligator clips on the ends.
Since it was a 12v drill, now I can just clamp it to any car battery.

If you need to test an electrical component (Electric fan, Power window or seat motor etc.) at a junk yard or swap meet I use the battery from my Cordless Drill - It has enough power to test a Lincoln Mark VIII fan. Either strip back the wires and touch the terminals or use a couple of small jumper wires.

Tape also works, but a bussiness card magnet can be cut to fit inside the sockets and will hold well unless you're working with stainless.

Re: Cheap Tricks

You can also use a water/vinegar mix in a spray bottle to keep ice from sticking to your windshield. Mix at a 1 part water to 3 parts vinegar solution. Spray on at night before going to bed. Sure a lot easier at 8:30 a.m to not have to scrape, and the neighbors appreciate not hearing the truck idle for 20 minutes!!

Re: Cheap Tricks

For ice on the windshield in the morning and you dont want to use hot/warm water(which can freeze back if its cold enough outside) and you forgot to put you cardboard on the windshield...take an old spritzer bottle and fill it with Rubbing Alcohol, spray it on the ice and it melts it away. Have the windshield wipers running at the same time and no more ice.

Re: Cheap Tricks

windshield ice.....sprinkle table salt....go finish your coffee
but i like rainex too ,summer tho,now teflon wipers work well

have an auto start, don't want to leave the key but want to run in to the store
with it running,in park, push the start button,(some have audible click)remove key, auto start timer kicks in incase you forget to go back

another defroster tip, turn the hot air to the dash vents if you have AC,heat the cab up quicker, back to fefrost before driving

removing an engine.....hate dribbling antifreeze it's pet poision....I use rubber plugs ,same from pool winterizing

I drink a lot of coffee.....must have 100+ large coffe tins around
Maxwell house used to have a lip,on a solid tin can,(not anymore)
great for sockets, parts etc....can fit 12 in the large tupperware tubs for carrying

got deck off cuts of 4X4s and 6X6,tire wedges or lowering the gas tank onto

I carry rubber gloves in the glove box, lots of uses, from emerg repairs to pickin up dog poop

when you put used buckets in,see if you can switch left for right, change the wear patterns

I always carry a lighter in the winter,

cheap water fire extinguisher ,keep a two liter bottle of water handy with a pin hole in the cap

rusty manifold studs?use brass nuts, might need two for the lock, cover the stud

can't say ive used the dishwasher to clean but i did use the oven to soften new snowblower tires enough to get on the rim,had to put tubes in,who'd a thought plastic rims leak in the cold

before i got a real exhaust lovered fan installed,in the shop door(renting I installed my own door and cut a hole init)when we were sanding in the garage,we put a box fan pointing down and dropped furnace filters (3-4) over the back of the box fan,cut down on dust and paint

garage doors can sometimes be defeated and access gained,i put sliding bolts,in the track
keeps the wheel from moving

need bedroom storage space, consider building a bedbox
built two boxes ,the two fit together queen size, stained and cleared to match the headboard, dressers
heck i even recleared everything, higher gloss and now more protection for the kid

Re: Cheap Tricks

ok something for the hotter states,or sometimes hotter state
we (northern folk) put window shakers in for the summer humid season
well i thought a couple of years back and make a "fake"window
basicly take your average sliding window, with a stationary side
remove the stationary side, make a shelf for the unit and build around it, to replicate the stationary side
replace and use the sliding part ,as norm, ours opens over half way
most people i see do a sad job sealing the unit in,when thats when they take out only the slider anyway,or leave it in leaving a glass gap the other side(red line)

I also removed side casement window (1 of 3)to put another unit in
allows the middle window to function normally
(windows replaced for winter)
prob need pics for this lol, found some might help

Talking Re: Cheap Tricks

Well I don't know about cheap but since I already had them I put them back to use.

My wife wanted new lights for the fire place and kitchen so I made use of these in the garage for when I'm working on the truck. Just used some old drop cords that the ends were no good and straight wire them to the lights.

I use this one under the truck and it want burn u like a shop light.

These I mounted on the garage door rail. When my garage door is up the ceiling light's had no effect so I mounted these.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Did this to my Dad's C6 Corvette.
It ended up causing a fault in the system, and had to be replaced with a standard Tstat.

So for the people with computerized systems, this old trick may backfire on ya.

Just a heads up.
