Re: Project' 69 c10 aka sin.

I think it's worth a grand, especially where we live, and considering the shape it's it. I'm diggin' it.

On the drivers side of the block, towards the back, there should be a pipe plug that'll drain the coolant out. Otherwise, petcock on the raditor, or take the bottom radiator hose off. I've always used the pipe plug in the block for draining my sixes.

some basic info:
http://www.oldride.com/library/1962_...t_bel_air.html

If the engine is stock, it's definitely a 230. If not, it could be either a 230 or a 250 - the only difference between the two is the stroke. You can tell by looking at the pistons - the 230 was flat top, and the 250 was dished, if I remember right. Otherwise, get the engine block numbers off it, and check them. The only thing you may have going for you is that it's a pre-250 block, being a '62. So it might come up 230 straight across the board. Otherwise, the blocks are interchangable.

So, the best thing is, is that any newer generation of L6 or V8 will bolt right in. 194, 230, 250 sixes, 265, 283, 305, 307, 327, 350..yadda yadda...You get the picture.

Once again, I really dig that land yacht. Four doors are really warming up to me...

Re: Project' 69 c10 aka sin.

Its definitely a later model inline six, the same family as the 250 in yours truck. So, the headgasket *should* be the same across the board, since the heads are interchangable.

At least, thats what I say. Check www.inliners.org. There's a link on the left hand side of the page above bulletin board and classifieds labeled "casting #s". Find your numbers and run it off of there. There should be some on the block, both on the drivers side cast in, and then stamped ones by the distributer pad.

Re: Project' 69 c10 aka sin.

the best way to tell whether its a 235 or 230 is when u take the head off measure the bore. a 235 has a 3.5625in bore and the 230 has a 3.875in bore
also ifu have the manifolds off if the exhaust ports at 2 &3 and 4&5 share the same port then its a 235, as they only have 4 exh. ports. i believe i remembered this right i got it off the inliners website a while ago but couldn't find it again tonite. good luck!!

Re: Project' 69 c10 aka sin.

I'm gonna be bullheaded, and stick with later series inline six, and say 230.

The square intake ports give it away.

pice of 235 intake from clifford:

pic of 250 intake from clifford:

comparison of the two, with the 230/250 on top, and the 235/261 on bottom:

That, coupled with the valve cover differences.

235 - attached with either two bolts in the middle or four bolts along the edge:

230/250 - attached with a multitude of bolts on each side:

Then again, this is just one guys opinion. If or when you pull the head, the combustion chamber will be a dead giveaway if there is any doubt. The 235 has a combustion chamber much like the W-head V8's, while the 230/250 has a chamber thats fairly standard as far as inline six and small blocks are concerned.

Edit: I just pulled out the Santucci inline six power manual. If you can get the casting number on the drivers side, I can run it through the number in the book.

That aside, the side covers should also be a give away., along with the rockers. 235's were on a rocker shaft, while the ones in the pics are free on their own studs.

Not trying to be nasty, just trying to help make sure you know what you have.

Re: Project' 69 c10 aka sin.

Sam is right. The engine you pictured is not a 235. The 230 and 235 engines are 2 totally different animals and the one you pictured is a 3rd generation 6 cyl Chevy that began prouction in 1962. The 235 comes from the 2nd generation 6 cyl family and that aren't one! The stamped rocker arms are a dead giveaway, because they didn't appear until the introduction of the 3rd gen family (194/230/250/292).

Re: Project' 69 c10 aka sin.

another pic of the motor
well you where doing all the research i called the motor service and they said that the ports are round or oval on a 235. and this motor being the 3 rd gen not a stovebolt like the 235 and yes the dead give away is that there is no rocker shaft.

thank you for all your research the guy at the machine shop even said this car came with a 235 only.

so would you say this is not the orginal motor.is there a way to match the numbers of the car and the motor.
i know that 1962 was the first year that this motor was produced.

Re: Project' 69 c10 aka sin.

so my plan is to pull the head didnt have the energy to do it today hopefully tomorrow or when my brother is here.
were going to clean it up the best we can get the valves moving again. i'm also gonna clean the pistons up cause there was some gunk on them from when i was setting the timing with a close wire.
but we should be able to get it running. it already has been running but had no power because two of the pistons weren't firing. how are rocker arms studs installed? i believe the 230 was the first gen motor to have this kind of set up. with the rocker arm studs much like chevys small blocks.
unlike the 235 with a valve core or shaft.
but how can i be sure this is a 230 rather than a 190.

also where exactly is the tag for engine decoding. right behind the distributor or is it a number like

*******
GM
**

im confused cause i cant seem to find a match

thanks for all the help on the car. guys. As always i love this board.

The casting number should be on the back of the block. Here's a site listing all 6 cylinder Chevys. You should find the number here: http://chevellebigblock.com/pdf/6Cyc...sExtensive.pdf

Re: Project' 69 c10 aka sin.

Could you check the numbers again? I apologize, the casting number is on the passenger side of the block, right behind the motor mount.

So, you're a number short, because the shortest I've found is 6 numbers.
However, the "32587x" numbers I find indicate a 250, both in the power manual and on inliners.org.

If you can for sure check the number, we'll have a better idea. However, 250 and 230 blocks were interchangeable, and the factory did so quite a few times. So, no worries, you still might have the stock engine in that ladn yachet yet.

Re: Project' 69 c10 aka sin.

well i ran the numbers with inliners and found out this is a 250 built from 68-84 i believe. so not the original motor? and the head makes it a 230 right. cause the intakes arnt the same on the 2 motors.

Well this has kinda become the 62's build thread but thats alright haha.
pulled the head.. here are some pics..
