Re: My build. Project Karma. 71 stepside.

I finished the hood. I decided to keep it as wide as the cowl hood.

Came out good. Here are some pics and then updated video.

Slick. Is there any trick to how you spray it? You said that you already had a base coat of one silver down under the shelf liner, is that also sprayed with the liner on or is it just a plain coat? I'm trying to imagine how it would look in different colors, like the turquoise metallic I'm planning for mine. Maybe as an accent on the interior, like the glove box, gage cluster, etc.

I have seen guys put silver base down, then put the liner over the silver and spray black. I had black base down, then put the liner down and did silver, shifted the liner a bit and darkened the silver and sprayed that. The key is to have that liner as CLOSE to the panel as possible so it comes out nice. Im not 100% happy with it, but when the sun hits the metallic it looks really cool either way...

Ya, I'm going have to try it on something. I just don't know what. I have some chrome in a can; I might use that instead of silver.

Got some updates and pics on the way.. I keep taking one step forward and two back. I got my grill all painted and clearcoated.. ended up sanding THROUGh the clear and base in a few spots and need to repaint that.

I picked up the new 3m da system for finishing clear coat. Takes ZERO time to get the panel straight and ready for polish. I had my front left fender DONE, was doing my final wet sand with 2000 grit when i went through in one tiny area.... Hopefully i wont have to reclear the fender but who knows...

I will be posting some pics and a short video here pretty soon...

Thanks. Currently im stuck... I have to much stuff going on. The truck has a few finished parts on it that need to be polished... Im very close to paint.

I just have a 93 landcruiser im building for 4x4'n. Then i have quads i like to take the kids camping with, and then the truck. It just seems like i have to choose between them all. Sucks..

Re: My build. Project Karma. 71 stepside.

Update and pics. Make sure you click the pics to get the full effect. lol.

SO, some back ground history is i used to detail for ALONG time. But, i have never wetsanded and buffed a black vehicle. All of my chemicals i have work fantastic on light colors. Well, when i went and tried to buff out the black tailgate with the same chemicals i got this.

Cllick the pics to get the full size.

As you can see, it looked like crap and my compound would shine up the silver area but the black wasnt cutting it. So, i switched compounds and about 30 mins later, i got this. This is my first finished piece of the truck. Im beyond excited. It looks like glass. I have never done any custom paint work or sprayed black, but i can honestly say its one of the smoothest blacks i have seen done... CLICK THE PICS to get the full effect please... Dont mind the dust. That was just from it sittin for 1 minute. It gets dirty quick.

Some other side notes is i drove it yesterday.. Holy cow. ANy gear, any time you acclerate the rear goes up in smoke. UNBELIEVABLE. Gotta love the 500lbs of torque. Thank you 454.

WOW!

It is amazing that you painted a piece of glass with the silver like that. How about showing a pic of the tailgate now?

You did a great job!

Re: My build. Project Karma. 71 stepside.

Update:

Bed is completely done now. wood in, fenders on. Wetsanded and polished. Looks good.

This weekend i put a coat of epoxy on the cab again, did a coat of evercoat featherfill. LOVE that stuff. Now i need to do another final coat of epoxy, wetsand with 400 and im ready for color....

As i sit and think about the truck, it has been FOR EVER since i took the doors apart, windows out. I really have NO idea how that stuff goes back together. LOL. Any tips? I have one door that is completely intact so i think i can just look at that and see where stuff goes. There is no window in it though...
Pics of the epoxy. Boring i know. But if you look back you can see all the outside metal work i did. It looks freakin good.

No gas cap. WOOT

I will post the bed pics when it snot rainin and i can get it outside.

Good to see you haven't just given up and disappeared. Looks good. Makes me realize I need a new spray gun or some lessons on spraying epoxy, bacause mine looks very rough compared to that.

Look at the second post in this thread for your door questions...
