Re: 1949 AD-kota

what yr chassis did ya go with, you do know the you can swap the 6 lug to the 5 lug to get the 5x4.5 bolt pattern, but will have to swap out the rear tho. i am going to use a gen 1 swb dakota for my 60 dodge tk project as the track width is slightly narrower, by the way its looking good.

Re: 1949 AD-kota

Need to get a few pictures taken, football season and the flooding we had slowed me way down.

The original column is getting replaced by a tilt. Only because I couldn't get the auto shifter to work out safely.

The chassis is the extended cab, '92 I think. I have some nice wheels for the 6 lug but I do know about the 5 bolt swap.

Re: 1949 AD-kota

Been moving slow and doing some light work in the shop. My brother came over to help get the front clip off and the set up block & trans out.

The motor mount now has the torque stap added. Yes, the strap is made from an AD brake pedal. I am a little cheap and it was too late to to buy steel.

Also got the pedal assembly attached to the dash.

Re: 1949 AD-kota

Now on to the tilt column. With the desire to have column shift, it was not working to use the old column and the dakota booster. My buddy Mark had a clean tilt column for cheap (free).

Here is the lower mount I made up, just a couple more little items and its done.

The billet mount is so easy to use that I can forgive myself for having it. Also seen is the attachment of the brake assembly to the dash.

As it went, I wasn't 100% accurate on the placement and the column rubbed the dash a little. So I made this shim to drop it. 3 1/2 x 1 1/2 x 3/16 inches the slots are 2 5/8" on center with 5/16" slots.

In all its glory, a tilt column with shifter.

Re: 1949 AD-kota

There was still a little flex at the dash with the column and brake unit. The original attachment point on the dash was chewed up from some harsh service. I made a new brace from some scrap 1/4" plate, 1" square tube and 1"X2" rectangle tube.

A little creativity with the hole saw and a file on the lower part of the mount.

Re: 1949 AD-kota

U-joint and 3/4" double D shaft hooked to the rack and pinion. Should be a heck of a lot easier to move around now.

Re: 1949 AD-kota

Well, I said I wasn't gonna do it...but I did. Tonight the frame was shortened 14 inches to make it 117 inch wheelbase. Then dumb me left the camera in the house. The Dakota shortens like the S10 so not a lot of new info there. Had the cab off and back on in 5 hours.

Re: 1949 AD-kota

Here is the frame splice. It is the way the factory did it. I carefully took the cutoff wheel and cut behind the weld, then cleaned up the factory weld with the grinder. Cut the excess off and slid it back together (comealongs and ratchet staps were needed), checked frame square and wheelbase, then re-welded.

Re: 1949 AD-kota

Started to fit the front sheet metal. Had to chase a bunch of threads plus drill and re-tap a few. There are a lot of 5/16 nc 3/4" bolts on this, glad I bought a box of them.

Can anyone tell me what screws I need to buy for the lower valance? The ones that go up into the grille and those from the inner fender to the valance.

Found them. #14 metal screws 3/4", I picked up the phillips head but will look for some with a hex head later on.

Re: 1949 AD-kota

The square nuts for the inner fender sometimes twist out . This can make for a struggle to find something to fit. Well, since I didn't toss out the hacked up innners that were here I had some good ones.

Press them out with a large deep socket, bolt and c clamp.

Take a file dress the edges of the nut and the hole of the inner fender, test fit then sand the crud from around the opening. Hold it in place with bolt and a larger nut.

Weld it in, now 5 more to go.

Re: 1949 AD-kota

Looked at getting the bumper and splash pan fit. Wow that was a ton of up and down, cut/grind/fit/swear/cut/grind/fit.

Here is how it finished.

After getting it tack welded here is how it was done. I used the front of the 3800 frame, radiator support forward.

Re: 1949 AD-kota

Thanks RAD.

Well I am back at work, so progress slows.

I decided to get the proportioning valve off the frame rail. This bracket is what was manufactured from the scrap pile.

Finish welded the trans mount, took out the old driveshaft and hanger bearing. Then was able to put the motor/trans in it.

Bolted up the power steering pump with Alan Grove bracket, slick stuff.

Re: 1949 AD-kota

SCORE!!! I just picked up a set of chrome smoothies in real good shape for $160. Located a 5 bolt dakota axle and rotors that I'll pick up next month.

Got a all new driveshaft made up. Also hooked up the shifter to the transmission. Just a bunch of fiddle work.

Re: 1949 AD-kota

Little update. The brother and I went in on the Eastwood flare tool. Wow, it is easy to do. Got the front lines done and still need to run the one to the rear.

Traded a set of hubcaps for a pair of stainless '54 tail lights. So today I made the brackets and did a test fit on a spare box.

Re: 1949 AD-kota

Got out in the shop for some me time. Started trying to get things closer. Some may have seen the box side shortening from a couple weeks back.

Finally put the electric fan on

Made a bracket and mounted the overflow can. Also put on a mopar t-stat housing and flex hose.

Got the Rebel wire harness mounted and roughly routed, waiting for the plugs that I didn't order with the kit.

Ran trans cooler lines to the cooler and made brackets for it. Just need to weld them in.

Next up a tech on the front marker lights.
