I can tell the rear isn't stock, but I'm not sure what it's from, and I don't know if the front is drop or not.

That rear end is a GM 10-bolt, looks like A-body judging by the upper control arm mounts on it.

Re: new guy ~ old project (53 chevy)

Depends on what you want to do with it. I thrashed and hammerd stock 10 bolts in the 60's and never broke one, but that was with 215Hp 283's. When I got a real engine I switch to an Olds rearend. My 64 Chevelle has a approx 325 HP 350, TH350 and stock ten bolt with 3.08 gears. I don't abuse it but have launched it hard on 235 wide tires without any problems. For everyday use they are fine, lots of stock 60's muscle cars, Vettes, etc. came from the factory with them. They can be upgraded with stronger gears, bearing, axles, posi, etc. if you want to use the housing.

Re: new guy ~ old project (53 chevy)

that is not a dropped front axle. you can however buy a dropped axle from speedway for a good price or go to droppedaxle.com
