Re: questions about a 67 c-30

You can swap this and swap that, but what baffles me is the dual wheel rear axle on trailing arms,if it is a C/20 Chassis. I've been assuming you are sure the panhard bar and spring mounts have not been welded or altered at all. The C/30 frames are slightly different in dimensions of the actual frame rails. That's another way to check the frame other than VIN or unaltered wheelbase. This is very interesting to me.
We have a member here with one saweet factory C/20 flatbed dual rear truck with coil rear. I never gave thought to what it's wheel base is or if GM used a C/30 frame with that option. I'm tempted to send him a message. His user name is Slomotion. I'm thinking his truck is 127" with an 8' (factory) bed. A C/30 w/133" WB would get a 9' bed.

Re: questions about a 67 c-30

update on my 67 chevy wrecker im restoring . i got a number give to me today from a memeber to chevrolet motor division and i stayed on the phone with them a hour we talked about the vin number and they read off to me all the technical info on the built of the truck back in 67 they said it is a 1967 chevrolet 3/4 ton c/20 and by the vin i gave them from my frame it does have he dual rear option that was installed . so to the memenr tht said they are rare and few and far inbetween . looks like i have one these trucks also .so now i really dont know to be happy or sad . i guess happy on the fact i have one of the rare versions of c/20s least the frame anyway . lol sence my cab was updated to a 67 ton number vin cab . i can still go and get the old cab from the guy i baught it from but he says it needs rockers and pans put in it and had windsheild front rail rot is why he changed it .

I tell ya,that was the only solution that made sense to me. That's why I was hung upon the narrow dual wheel rear with trailing arms. You have what I pictured above. I am still curious about all the frame, axle, trailing arm spread dimensions.
I had a C/10 I used in my business that hauled tools with a Reading steel tool cap. I put new C/20 coils in the rear with Air Lift bags inside of them. That really gave more load capacity. That's what I'd do with yours...the Air Lifts

Re: questions about a 67 c-30

ill measure the wheel base from front axle to rear axle and see what it is . and ill measure inbetween the trailing arms im guess u wantin to kn what theey measure at the back from inside one to the other ???? . and about the coil springs so i could get a set of air bags that can go inside the coil springs and beef the back of the suspention .

Re: questions about a 67 c-30

I appreciate the effort to satisfy my curiosity. Do it at you convenience. I can see the trailing arms are located closer to center at the axle,or it appears that way. How ever GM did it I'm sure it was with minimal specially made parts. Probably used the same trailing arms but the front mounts either located closer to center or slightly angled.

Here are those Bags:
http://www.airliftcompany.com/produc...s/air-lift1000

I see they boost suspension up to 1000#. The bags made for leaf spring add 3x that. Those mount at the u-bolts and the frame above. Your coils are ahead of that. I wonder if you could get those and modify or fabricate new mounts. Look around their website and maybe call and pick their brain

Re: questions about a 67 c-30

This answers a question for me, too - I was looking at parts for my C/3500 the other day and they showed a rear shock with coil spring (like you have) for the c/20 chassis, and I had no idea that could possibly have been a GM thing.

Re: questions about a 67 c-30

thats good . but yeah when i was on the phone the other dat with chevrolet motor division they told me all about the frame that it was a 67 3/4 ton frame only thing that was rare was a dually option rear end was installed by the factory and they said every thing was the same as a 3/4 all was 1/2 lug nuts and all was 8 lug that that version of 3/4 they had factory ton wheels on it from the factory they said my fender emblems should be bowtie 20s which they are . but i have 2 sets 0f 30s emblems for 67-68 trucks and that the coil springs and the coil over shocks was factory also they told me the truck was very rare . just like the memeber special -k said they said basically it comes down to the truck is just a 3/4 with a 1 ton apperance . but like some other members told me if i beef up the suspention a little bit in the front and rear then it becomes a ton in capacity .

Hey, ya'll talking about me?? That's a cool truck, and I would leave it like it is. Its cool to see something out the ordinary. Now if it just had the ultra rare Corvette option with even more rare special high performance ambulance engine, you'd have the rarest 67 EVER!

Re: questions about a 67 c-30

Ok,so you'll have a 127" WB and all the same 3/4t stuff. I should look at my 1/2t trailing arms. Maybe the hit the axle farther in than I'm thinking. So far I've only seen this on 67/68s. I'm surprised other members don't find this interesting enough to comment. To me,this is one of the biggest benefits of this website. I would never have known about these trucks without it...as well many many many other things. I never would have known who Jamie was or the special hi performance ambulance engine, either! (I already knew about the Corvette option. Who doesn't...duh?)

I wonder if it was ordered that way to save a little on frame length as Wreckers like short wheel bases for manueverability

This makes two factory C/20s with dual wheel option that I am aware of.

Re: questions about a 67 c-30

yeah i would have never known this truck was rare without this site i thought it was just a reg ordinary ton . which its not . its a factory 3/4 ton that looks like a ton . i been blasting the frame the last couple days cause im restoring it and the more i look at the suspention and etc you can see that its one of a kind cause i have few more these trucks but in 1/2 tons and i get under my 72 and you can tell that the dually wrecker 3/4 ton is one of a kind . so i guess that means when i order new brake shoes and etc i need to get them for a 1967 3/4 right ???

I'm thinking everything about your rear axle/brakes and front end/brakes is same as C/30. The frame is C/20.

Re: questions about a 67 c-30

yeah its hard work but its starting to look good and like a real wrecker again . the guy i baught this truck from i guess he didnt know how to weld or do body work is why he didnt want to fix the wrecker bed but to me it is a easier fix then all the trouble he whent threw to bult that black iron flat wrecker bed that was on it . i think its looks 100% better with the ernest holmes bed on it . more surprises yet to come ill be posting pics of . and on the air bags im going to eventually put in the rear coil springs this this is only going to haul cars and small trucks and 1/2 tons or a 3/4 ton so it should haul all them vehciles ok i would think so

Re: questions about a 67 c-30

Adding those bags truly bumps the suspension up a notch. Not just some band aid. Wreck bodies have style. I like flatbeds ok,but a body behind the cab always looks better. I always dug those welder rigs guys would set up. Basically a flatbed, but with panels below the deck with wheel openings and the rear is closed in. You're making me want to hang onto mine and start in on it. I just found a source for 2.5" x 48" chrome stacks w/turnouts. Not to be confused with the current diesel boyZ trend in "pickup" beds. These are from an ag supply intended for tractors and not too pricey. This truck once had them and it was a fairly common hop-up back in the day. It's already got the visor and bed rails and I just think they'd fit right in. It has cherry bombs that just shoot out under the bed and I think stacks would give a much better exhaust note. I have cab clearance lamps to mount and just did buy some Stepside tail lights to replace the rectangles
