Re: My new project 86 Silverado

I saw hung out with two guys this weekend that have the same color scheme as your original color, you should think about going back to those colors. One looked killer with new paint....glad you are getting it together..

i thought about that, and i actually have the blue paint for it, but i'm going hotrod black first (i'm confident i can spray that myself), then i'll go to the color when i can afford it

Torque converter was bad, and trans was slipping clutch material in fluid, was gonna have it souped up anyways. Sounds like that motor is going to be fun!

Re: My new project 86 Silverado

thought i'd share some pics of my high horsepower Olds 455 engine build, this is not the engine i just put in the truck, that is built with stock parts(rods/pistons etc.)...

new Olds 455 short block specs:
Block bored .025 over for Pontiac Icon pistons
Scat 7.00" H Beam rods
"N" crank
Balanced
ARP main studs
Align honed
Square decked
Bored and honed
Block dressed and relieved
Federal Mogul Race Main bearings
Clevite rod bearings
Durabond Cam bearings
Mahle Moly Top ring set - file fit.
Cloyes Billet timing set.

Cam - 232/236@.050 on a 110. I'll put it in at 106... will have gobs of torque and some tone. Lift is .568 on both INT/EXH

more pics as i get them from the builder

Re: My new project 86 Silverado

Awesome build so far! Keep up the progress. Just my 2 cents on the paint. I saw that someone told you to paint over 300 grit. In my experience in collision work and custom paint work, you can paint solid colors over 320 w/ no problems but can sometimes show sand swirls w/ metallics. We've always done final sanding w/ 400 grit or higher and metallics always lay in smooth. Can't wait to see this beast complete.

Also, thank you for your service sir.

thanks for the info, i started with 40 grit--->100 then epoxy primed, and sanded that with 300, then sprayed 2k primer... will sand down to 600 before i put any color on it..., maybe even finer...

it was a privilege to serve...

kind regards

Awesome. I may have misread the previous post. It was only like 15 pages ago lol. 600 is even better. Guaranteed smooth.

Re: My new project 86 Silverado

Are you going base coat clear...if so all you need to sand down to is 400. Use 400 wet....

X2 on what he said. 400 is really all u need to do. We used 320 for everything when I was doing collision repair. But you can paint over 400 w/ no problems at all. Also, it doesn't take as much time to block it down as it would w/ 600.

And I really hope your using base/clear. It's the way to go nowadays.
