Rebuild on a shoestring.....continued

Sold the bare cab today so I spent the day making it bare. Thankfully no surprises at all when taking out the glass and heater boxes. Also no surprises under or behind the gas tank other than some sort of cracked shells from a previous "pet"

Man, you forget how many parts there are in/on a cab. Laid out the parts for a few pictures.

I'm going to be finishing the pass cab corner, rear floor, 3spd shifter hole patch, and driver's rocker for additional payment on the cab.

Well.......

Change in plans.....

Olebeater sold the truck to someone else...thought we had an agreement after we talked on the phone and I said I'd take it for his asking price...
...but I understand because I was taking too long to get him the money and pick it up.

Either way...things will continue on as a swb...

I have a bare frame, trailing arms, new front suspension, and a really nice cab (at another guy's house)

So....things will be on hold for a bit on the project as I finish up the cab for the guy to pick up and hopefully can get the lwb frame sold and out of the way....

Once that's done I'll get the swb frame in the garage and start building a truck

Thanks, no search needed got the swb frame in my back yard...all new front end stuff in my house and trailing arms with new bushings and a really nice cab at a friend's house.

Just need to see about a 5 lug rear. I was planning to buy a new swb bed anyways. It was a better deal buying it all together but this route all I have to buy is the rear. I have everything else already so no initial cash layout.

you could just try to find 5 lug axles and brakedrums and mount those in and on youre diff

That is good to hear. Less cash outlay is always good

A square body rear axle with a set of trailing arm perches added to it could be a whole lot easier to find and probably less expensive too. The 8-1/2" 10-bolt from the newer ones is easier to find and is easy to get good gearing and posi carriers for too.

I actually just remembered I already do have one...picked up locally for $50 a few months ago...not sure of the gear ratio though and it's off a 73-up so I'll have to weld on the perches in the right spot but it'll work

Sorry to hear that your deal fell through but it sounds like you have a nice backup plan. One question for you, is the stepside bed your were going to sell the one off the truck that fell through? Probably with my luck it was lol.

yes, same plans...(although now I can truly call it a frame off build )

I put an ad on craigslist tonight to see if I get anyone interested in having me build it with their selections. If not, the plan is: (since the cab I'm getting is a 72 cheyenne with cargo light and headliner)

71-72 front clip (have this)
350/350 drivetrain (have this)
all new front suspension parts (have this)
cpp front sway bar (have this from another build)
perfect trailing arms with new bushings (have this)
power disc brakes (have this)
power steering (have this)
4.5/6 drop w/ extreme trac bar, shock relocators and new shocks (have most of this)
rally wheels (have them with nice tires)
all new steel floor short fleet bed (will have to purchase)
tilt steering (have this)
tach dash (only have about 8 right now )
recovered bench seat (have this although will need the correct year cover)
no trim

Options are (only if someone commits to the finished truck and chooses them):
trim
a/c (aftermarket)
bucket seats and console (have 6 pair of buckets right now and about 20 good consoles)
custom options (like a custom tailgate panel I had made for a previous project- and a reverse opening handle)


Thinking of starting a new thread and linking here once I finish the work on the old cab....this build is getting too confusing

Jonathan I am pretty sure you could put a truck together with what you have now. I know where a short fleet bed is right now, I'll check and see if the guy still has it. It has a GMC gate on it though.. Blue (if that matters) No trim holes.

I'd be interested pending price and condition but shipping will likely kill a deal...unless you're coming my way and could haul it for a good deal

Gate doesn't matter as I can always sell it...

The reason I'm thinking new is there will be no dents or body work....

I'm pulling for ya. We're all in this together. To be perfectly honest, I have no idea what you are building here anymore. And it doesn't matter. I like to see builds with unique touches. I want to see how others overcome the challenges they inevitably hit. I like watching the pro builders show off their skills. I like to read threads from people that have great character and share it, giving up a piece of themselves in their builds and in their stories. So build something dude.

I like to set a challenge for myself to keep interested and to make me think about what I'm doing (example: my Jimmy). I think that if I was sitting in a yard of parts, like you, I would challenge myself to complete a truck using only what I already had on hand (with an exception for normal wear parts and trading parts to get what was needed). Make it more personal and fun rather than what I believe others are looking for. But that's just me. Everyone has their own things that motivate them. Whats yours?

Quite honestly my current motivation is to provide for my family. I really enjoy working on these trucks and have built up quite the inventory of parts so it's the logical thing to do to use my parts and experience and sell a truck...I haven't had steady full time work since January 2011....
The original build was going to be my "trash truck" but I can't afford to have an extra vehicle at the moment...and sadly it was worth much more parted out than what I paid for it...
I know I will make more selling a swb vs a lwb so that's the reason for the change in direction...

It doesn't matter what your building...as long as your building. There are alot worse things you could be doing. I think its cool that you can do something you love and make $$. I hope its a home run for you and your family. Later.
