Re: 69 LWB Fleet Build thread "The Beast"

Current update, name revision so far is "Heather", got a new ......well new to me 6 lug wheel and tire mounted on the passenger front corner, just a good steelie, old one was an aluminum wheel that wouldnt hold air, got a new longer alternator belt so some PO screw ups have been resolved, working on the ignition and radiator now, still gotta get a battery for it, once i get that list done then ill start on the title work, get the title work done, buy some trans seals, take it to school and get it on a lift and replace both seals and check to make sure the converter is good while i have it out, if its bad i think i have a spare in my toolbox, i mean i know i have a converter that came off a 350 but it was a late model 350 like late 80's to mid 90's so i dont know how similar it is

Re: 69 LWB Fleet Build thread "The Beast"

Yay new parts! well a new part anyway, bought a offenhauser 4 barrel pontiac intake at the swapmeet on saturday in cleveland, so still lookin for a factory radiator to replace my HUGE one that doesnt fit in the core support and now lookin for a good 4 barrel carb to replace the hacked up excuse of a rochester sitting on top of my engine, once those are found and put into action then itll b time to decide it i wanna find a shroud, build one or just go with electic fans up against the radiator, any advice on the matter?

Re: 69 LWB Fleet Build thread "The Beast"

Just want to post a few things to get facts straight.
350 Pontiac's are more expensive to build than 400's because of piston and ring prices, otherwise they are the same.
Stock Pontiac motors make torque in huge amounts that no stock small block Chevy can without expensive mods, but the 1st gen small blocks and Pontiac's are as different as night and day.
There are cast in numbers on the side of the block such as "400" or "350" or "455".
The center exhaust port cast numbers tell you what heads you have. A 350 Pontiac will limit what heads you can use unless you are lucky enough to have a notched block.
Headers are no problem as long as you don't have one of the few heads that were manufactured without end exhaust bolt holes. Not a deal buster but something to consider.
Factory cast iron headers are around and flow well.
700r4 will NOT bolt to a Pontiac but the good news is a TH400 and a 3.42 gear can put your truck on the road and get decent gas mileage and the Buick Grand National 200-4R will live behind a street Pontiac.
Pontiac is a LOW rpm motor compared to a mouse motor and high gears are NOT necessary. My 68 firebird ran a best 11.44 with a 3.55 gear. Something to consider.
I have been building Pontiac motors for a long time and have gathered information that I am happy to share freely.
I had a BBC in my 67 GTO that I ran for a season but pulled it out because it wasn't as good a motor as my 474 inch Pontiac.
I am not slamming Chevy, they are fine for what they are, it's just that I love to be different and have no problem helping others improve their trucks too.

Re: 69 LWB Fleet Build thread "The Beast"

Almost forgot to say that someone has started stripping the 67, the broke part of the shroud and took the radiator along with some wiring that they cut out, well i got the shroud and radiator mounts, my dad got the name and phone number of the woman who owns the land that the truck is sitting on, lost the info, trying to get it again cuz there used to be an astro van sitting there and its gone now and I'm guessing this lady is gonna say haul that old truck off of my land and ill be hugging that old woman thinking "do u know how low the production numbers are on that truck"

Re: 69 LWB Fleet Build thread "The Beast"

Well got her started a few times over the last week, hooked the lower radiator hose back up, filled the radiator with "clear" antifreeze lol, its holding water, hooked up an amp guage and confirmed that I wired up the alternator correctly, gotta unhook the carb line and see if the pump is runnin, ive had it runnin but only cause ive primed the carb, not actually getting fuel to it, kinda afraid to get fuel to it since its sat a few years, still a cast iron manifold with a 2 barell rochester perched on top but i have a dual plane offenhauser waiting for a new carb

Re: 69 LWB Fleet Build thread "The Beast"

Had the rubber line unhooked that runs between the hard line off of the pump and the hard line off of the carb, unhooked the line from the filter and dropped it into a bottle full of gas, primed the float, fired it up and the pump went to pumpin so id say the filter is clogged as ever, gotta pump the old gas out, made a small piece of pipe to join the two pieces of rubber line back together so i can pump out all the bad gas and not run it thru a new filter. So the plan is pump the gas out, put on a new filter, put n a few gallons of gas, top off the trans with fluid and drive it around the yard oh and uh air up the driver side tire too, that might help lol

I like that. I got a 69 LWB myself..Id rather keep my 69 lwb the way it is then cut the frame up and make it a short bed like EVERYONE has done. This build looks good! Keep it up.

Re: 69 LWB Fleet Build thread "The Beast"

Thanks for the encouragement on the build, well here I am with one less vehicle, still got the truck, even though a few times ive let my mind slip to "well i need the money and ill always be able to find another truck" I've always come back to the realization that im stuck with her and now with a shed she's slowly becoming not storage anymore........most of the reason this is a slooow project.....well that and lack of funds

Re: 69 LWB Fleet Build thread "The Beast"

My advise, for what it is worth, pull the tank and flush it out, replace the rubber line between the tank and hardline and between the fuel pump and hardline. In fact, blow out the metal lines all together. Replace the filter if you have one, between the carb and fuel pump and don't forget that there is a filter in the carb too.
A 650 cfm is the biggest carb you will need for that big "poncho" motor your sporting.
Shoot me a PM and let me know what heads you have on that 350 and I can give you some cam choices.
This is the triple D setup my best friend and I put on his 474 inch motor we put in his 66 GTO and a dual quad setup that has been my signature setup for about 20 years.
Pontiac motors get me fired up!

Re: 69 LWB Fleet Build thread "The Beast"

Got the drivers side of the cab cleaned up so I can sit in there again and start moving the truck around my yard som. Been sitting there for no reason for too long. Recently got a shed so its time to move it close to the shed and clean out the cab and bed so the cab is clean, the bed has as little in it as possible and i can pull the seat and tank and flush out the tank, put the tank and seat back in, and put a few gallons of gas in it. Got a good fuel filter to put on it and plenty of trans fluid. Need to get a front and rear trans seal and a pan gasket

Re: 69 LWB Fleet Build thread "The Beast"

Well I guess what I'd like to have in one post will become three cuz im being lazy, using my phone and i dont feel like writing down long web adresses, well anyway i have 3 radiators and 2 fan assemblies laying around from a few vehicles that sadly got crushed, one fan assembly is a dual :-D the other is a single with the the brackets hanging off of it, you know the electric fan that kinda looks like a spider, yeah one of those. Well here is the first link; 2001 chevy venture minivan
http://www.autozone.com/autozone/par...1813_266534_0_
My question is willl any of these radiators (links for the other two will be up soon) along with any of the fans i have (guessing probably the dual setup) cool the pontiac well enough to drive the truck daily and sit in traffic or even just well enough to drive around town every now and then and not worry about overheating in the summer

Re: 69 LWB Fleet Build thread "The Beast"

Looking at cooling capacity and deminsions with all 3 of these, I know none of them are 4 cores, I have a big monsterous 4 core in the truck now thats way too wide to fit into the core support so I just want somethin that will fit and do its job whether it be radiator and mechanical fan or rad and electric fan or both fans, which with running one of these three radiators i believe there will be room for the mechanical clutch fan and the dual electric fan setup i have from the minivan

Re: 69 LWB Fleet Build thread "The Beast"

Well insomnia is getting the best of me well that and my mom leaving earlier in an ambulance, thats a totally different story in itself, dont worry boys she's doin ok, well i used the autozone website on my phone and compared all three radiators again and again and the old blazer radiator is a lil short and a lil narrow but its the only one that will sit in place and its the second thickest, i think it plus the dual fans and clutch fan or just the dual fans will work......now i just need feedback lol

Re: 69 LWB Fleet Build thread "The Beast"

There is no real difference in cooling the Pontiac over a chebby V8. There are things to look at if you have cooling problems with the motor on a Pontiac. If you aren't using a high efficiency radiator and you are using the copper stock job, you will be better off with a 4 row than anything else. Putting on a thermostatically controlled electric fan helps a lot.
Of course everything needs to be in good working order to begine with.

Re: 69 LWB Fleet Build thread "The Beast"

no idea when ill be able to buy the things i have planned for the truck but the best deak ive found on a radiator that i like is a 4 core Murray copper/brass from oreilly for $180 and as far as cleaning up my wiring im eventually gonna get a painless performance kit made just for 67-72s, gotta clean up my offenhauser intake and find a good 650 cfm, finally decided pn just a single four barrel, thats another dream until funds are available, id say a 650 vaccum secondary with electric choke is my best bet at runnin how i want it to and being convenient
