A little progress...

I finally a few free hours to work my 1 ton today. I have had it few weeks now, but have been too busy to touch it. I got out today, and put a set a 16" rims and tires I had laying around and got it running. This truck has been sitting since 1992, so needless to say it has some issues that need addressing. I changed out the gas tank and master cylinder with used stuff from a parts truck that was running a few months ago. I pulled the cap and rotor and filed the points, and the ol' 292 came right back to life!! I anticipated a carb change, but it actually ran pretty good after it ran awhile. It would need building if I were going to start driving everyday, but since I'm going with the diesel, I just wanted to see if I could get this engine running to get it mobile. I took it a quick little run up the road, and the 292 felt amazingly strong to have sat for so long. I'm sure those 5.14's in the Eaton rearend didn't have anything to do with it!! The SM420 tranny (the only part of the drivetrain I am going to keep in the truck) shifted very smooth, and doesn't have the slop in the shifter that some of the high mileage trucks I have had. This truck only has 61,000 showing on the odometer, and judging by the wear on the pedals, and the fact the factory seat is not torn, and how tight it drove, I think the miles are correct. The front fenders, hood, and doors are nearly flawless, with only a few very minor dings. They have no rust which is a huge plus!! The rockers have a little, but are not near as bad as most I seen. It felt great to actually be able to drive it, and now I am on fire more than I was before!!

BTW, I found a few more 1 ton pics!! This one is a NAPCO conversion.

This a chopped top photoshopped pic.

Jim, Here's a few older pics of the ol' big beast! I have got new tires for it and painted the rims in process after these pics were taken, but I haven't put any paint on the truck itself yet. I have intentions to, but all my other projects eat up my already limited "play time". I want to get out there and line 'em all up like Joe's Junk did one did. I would rather my '67 1 ton and the wrecker look a little better though. This C-50 is bad boy. I use it as a jack, engine puller, car lift (junk cars, of course) and about whatever I need to do around theb place. I can throw the sling up in the back, and run the cable through the roof of an old car that I need to take a rearend, etc. out of, and lift the whole car up almost 6ft. After I get it up, I throw a few safety chains around the boom, and I can pretty much do what I need to do under there. I also use it to pull buses, dump trucks, big box trucks and all kinds of medium or heavy duty trucks for myself, and for other people on occassion. I guy gave me 8 junk school buses a few months ago, and I went out there and stripped the good stuff and hauled all 8 to the scrap yard with it. I made a pretty good payday with scrap being as high as was then. My '69 ramp truck and this old wrecker have paid for themselves many times over. I wish my toys would do that!!

I notice it has bud wheels, is that what it had when you got the truck? I'm looking to buy a C50 dump w/ 2 spd rear axle. On another thread it was mentioned that the bud wheels were used on higher GVWR trucks.

They are factory I think. The tag inside the glove box reads "Auxilary Spring EQ" and "RR Spring 23,000 LB" so I guess that might the be case. This truck did not get the power brake booster under the truck like most did, it had a Midland brake system, and has a huge round booster and master cylinder mounted where a normal pickup would be. I had to buy a master cylinder a few years ago, and it was quite pricey! The rebuild kit it for was going to be like $188 plus tax, so I went ahead and bought the new master cylinder since it was guaranteed to work. The truck does stop very good though. Like most of these probably do, it has dual wheel cylinders on each wheel. I don't know where you are, but there is a pretty decent looking C-50 Dump truck on Ebay in Ohio right now: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...525340709&rd=1

Good luck with your search!

That truck has both style rims bud up front and the dayton in the rear, I believe that's what they are called. That looks exactly like the one I'm going to buy. All I'll need to do is replace a wheel cyclinder in the rear. Thanks for the info.

67_c-30 i see you came through again with some great pics. you shouldn't be so hard on yourself with your trucks. you should line them up anyway. i doubt many ,if any of us at all would be able to do it! the big green machine is a real brute . i can see where that could come in handy alot of times. your red 1 ton looks real good. glad to see you got it running on the road again. where are you located? i see you don't have it filled out in your header. secondly i was also wondering if you knew anything about the green gmc that you posted? i see it was for sale. it seems like it was in great shape. thanks again.....

7gmc2, Canadian694X4 Thanks for the compliments on the "big green machine" as 7gmc2 called it. I wish my wife would have had the same feelings toward it that you guys do when I bought a few years ago. I don't know why she couldn't see its inner beauty I may try to get out there a get a group shot one day this week. Maybe if I do, I can talk one of the Photoshops gurus into "repainting" the Wrecker and the red '67 C-30 for me. That should add some motivation huh? To answer your other questions 7gmc2, I am located in Valley, AL. I also don't know anything about the green truck that is/was for sale.

Not exactly what I like, but it may inspire someone else.

I'd chop about a foot and half off the rear, and put a wrecker boom on it!

Well actually it could be fiberglass. US Body Source makes every single body part there is, including complete beds and cabs, for our trucks. Check out this link!! http://www.usbody.com/Pages_Trucks/67-Chevy.htm I called them last week and they said they could make custom prefit fiberglass dually fenders. The only problem is they want $600 each to do them. I can spend that $1200 somewhere else on the truck!

This not a 1 ton, but I know a lot people building 1 tons, and looking at this thread want to do extended cab conversions. This is the way it ought to look IMO!! This truck looks like it came that way!!
