Zddp oil additives
Who's running one of the zddp (zinc/phosphorus) additives in your oil for your older classic rebuilt flat tappet(lifter) cam engines
Since they are taking zinc/phosphorus out of all oils because it wreaks catalytic converters etc Ive been doing alittle research, the brands I've found are : ZPPD plus http://zddplus.com/ ZPPD max http://www.zddpmaxx.com/ Lucas http://www.jegs.com/i/Lucas-Oil/639/...FVBlfgodX6oDbA

Re: Zddp oil additives
I am currently running plain Napa 0w-40 in my 305 v6. Going to add the Lucas break in zinc shortly. The Best thing you could do is purchase a good oil like Gibbs, Pen, or Royal Purple, and best of all Amsoil. They have zinc in them and all have great reputations.

Re: Zddp oil additives
I read this article (below link) and it changed my mindset about the ZDDP debate. I ran Rotella 10/30W semi/synthetic with ZDDP. I lost a flat tappet CAM recently and going in this direction with engine oil for my older vehicles. Its a PIA to have to R&R good running motor for the last 75/80K miles because of lubricants standards.

Re: Zddp oil additives
i replaced a fair amount of worn camshafts back in the 60's-70's - long before the zddp was eliminated

Re: Zddp oil additives
Amsoil is the best. Use the flush if not running synthetic now.

Re: Zddp oil additives
Alot of good information here: Tech Briefs http://zddplus.com/about-us/tech-briefs/
I talked to Howard, the guy that wrote all the Tech Briefs. Very informative guy First one I read was "Diesel Oil Use in Classic and High-Performance Gasoline Engines" I know guys running Diesel oil like Delo and Rotela in their Gas Race motors. Not necessarily a good idea. I agree Brad Penn oil is good stuff. But its around $9.00 a quart

Re: Zddp oil additives
I think Gibbs oil is around $7 a quart. My machinist swears by it.

I use some STP with my oil change. Still lists ZDDP on the label, though not sure the concentration these days.
Whatever you use, just remember that more ZDDP is not better. Too high levels can create a corrosive condition.Oh my yes. Around the late 60s to early 70s many manufacturers were switching from flame hardening to cheaper electric induction processes. Often the middle of the stick would not heat properly with premature worn center lobes the result. Pontiac V8 were particularly prone since they had double valve springs & higher pressures straight out of the factory.

Re: Zddp oil additives
This is what Amsoil says about their ZRod motor oil.
AMSOIL Z-ROD Synthetic Motor Oil is specially engineered for classic and high-performance vehicles. It features a high-zinc formulation to prevent wear on flat-tappet camshafts and other critical engine components, along with a proprietary blend of rust and corrosion inhibitors for added protection during long-term storage. Z-ROD Synthetic Motor Oil is designed to perform on the street and protect during storage. Amsoil is designed not refined!

using Mobil 1 10W - 40 high mileage. It will either live or die with this oil, not worried about it.

I like Chevron Delo, and chevron still shows the zinc/phosphorus amounts in the product data sheet. Shell doesnt. They are both great oils

Re: Zddp oil additives
Did ya here Commifornia govenor Moonbeam Brown banned Valvoline VR1
They just passed a law in Ca. banning certain API rated oil Even amazon wont ship VR1 to Ca I expect Valvoline will reformulate it for a "legal' api rating

Re: Zddp oil additives
I called Valvoline tech . VR1 Valvoline is not banned in Ca.,,, Its just a internet hoax, is what the tech told me. The API ratings for VR1 are approved for commiefornia
The tech says anyone refusing to ship VR1 to Ca. (Amazon) is misinformed and wrong I had some dude that owns a HotRod shop tell me that Delo and Rotella have zero ZPPD content because of the epa laws. Of course he is wromg. I called chevron and confirmed that also. Even Chevron's up to date Product Data sheet shows DelO is Zinc/phosphorus- .13/.12

Re: Zddp oil additives
I've talked to Richard Clark about this a few times. I know he has his hands in the making of Zplus, but I trust what he says. He is a stand up guy from what I know. I have been to his shop many times. I use it in my GN and C10.
Some of the products out there have it in them but not enough to do what its suppose to do. |

I have a recently rebuilt 283, but I don't know how it was rebuilt and with what parts, so I was searching additives and came across this thread. - subscribed for reference.
