rebuilding water pump ?

Hello, Does the shaft push out the front or the back of the casting?
I took the flange off to push it thru and out the back but I'm not sure that's the way it comes out.
Thanks. K.E.N.

Re: rebuilding water pump ?

I dont want to come across as a smart head but why rebuild a water pump? They are cheap and you don't worry about it failing later cause every part is new

Re: rebuilding water pump ?

I also wouldn't bother rebuilding a water pump from one of these trucks. They're cheap and readily available. I priced out a water pump for a Deere 420, a 30-hp 1950's tractor, and was shocked at the $400 price. I bought a generic seal and shaft assembly for $50 and made it fit. I absolutely don't fault you though for wanting to attempt to disassemble it to see if you can. That's the best way to learn how stuff works. Sorry I'm no help on which way it comes out.

Re: rebuilding water pump ?

Remove the rear steel plate from the back of the pump. Clean the maunting surface to remove any residual gasket.

Press off the mount that the fan pulley attaches to...

NOTE !

Before doing so, lay the pump on its back on a bench and measure the height of the pulley mount from the surface...write it down for future reference.

Place the back pump on the press plates with the opening in the press plates sufficient to allow the impeller to pass thru...

Press the old bearing and seal and impeller assembly out from front to back....

Clean up the bore of the housing and check well for corrosion and cracks....if you find any, junk the pump....

The new bearing is pressed in from the back then the seal is installed and finally the impeller is pressed on but not deep enough to lock against the housing...usually leave about 45 thou clearance.

Place a support on the back of the impeller shaft to stop the bearing being forced out backwards during the next step.

Place pump back down on press plate and install pulley flange to same height as originally measured...

Have fun...
