Re: used zz4 crate engine.WIW

it would depend to me heavily on the documentation on the miles/original purchase date and if I could hear it run and check it out (ie. pull valve covers and maybe intake)

I've seen the engine and it looks good, no oil leaks. But still not sure of the miles. All I know is it was in a nice looking truck at one time. Its still pretty clean and sitting on the floor.

Do a compression check. That will tell you a lot.

Re: used zz4 crate engine.WIW

$100. in scrap----$250. if it's really a ZZ and rebuildable------maybe $1,000. if it can be proved to be good running--compression, miles, leakdown. Twice that if truly low miles (under 10,000) and in excellent condition. It is used, no telling if it was installed and oil primed properly, ---many of the GM crate motors have had a history of running hot so buyer beware. Is the factory warranty transferable---if so, I would buy it.

Re: used zz4 crate engine.WIW

I paid $2000 for one with low miles @10 years ago but was able to test drive it before the seller removed it from the truck it was in.

It is now a ZZ430 replica and still running very strong.

Be careful of how the truck was wrecked as well - a lot of times the jolt of the accident can screw up a motor. And if it's a stroker, you have to ask yourself how it was treated - was it driven hard?

Re: used zz4 crate engine.WIW

I have never heard of a wide spread problem of GM create engines running hot. I'm unable to find anything on the web about it either. I don't think that should be a concern.

A ZZ4 engine is selling for $4500 on Summit's site. Two years ago I was able to buy one of these engines new for $3695.

I agree with you cdowns. Not sure the owner of the engine would though,LOL. The truck was going fast enough to jump the curb get airborn and hit the tree. It hit right on the drivers side frame and bent it down at about a 70 degree angle. It really screwed it up good. And it is a zz4. It has it stamped on the head.

Re: used zz4 crate engine.WIW

It should be an 880 block with L98 corvette aluminum heads . I duplicated the short block of one and had a set of vortecs and a hot cam and sold it for $1850 local . It was fresh and is now in a 57' chevy car . I would say less than $1000 or unless they can confirm it's in good shape .

Re: used zz4 crate engine.WIW

Thanks for all the replies, I have been considering it over the rebuilding of a vortec which I have recently ordered parts for. What kinda numbers do you think I could get out of it if I converted it to tbi? Or would a factory tbi even run it. I know I would have to go with the 454 injectors but dont know what else I would need to do.

Yes you should.....and I moved it.
It is after-all a WIW and not 67-72 specific either.

A friend of mine bought one a year ago wrapped in a POS '84 Chevy 4x4. He gave $1000 for the whole thing.

Re: used zz4 crate engine.WIW

It`s only a crate motor until you remove it from the crate. Now it`s a used motor.I`d never pay more than $500 for a used motor unless I knew it`s history from new and could test it running.
It`s true,if it was a hard hit in front I`d want to pull the heads and check lifters and push rods.I`ve seen L-shaped lifters in new motors.
