odd question... maybe

I'm looking at a '63 step-side. What I want to know is what are the dimensions of the gas tank that's behind the seat. I know the capacity (19 gal or so) but I'm thinking of moving the tank to the bed and I want to know if it's feasible.
Thanks.

Re: odd question... maybe

yes it is, speak to Pro Performance, they sell Boyd Welding tanks that fit nicely between the frame rails.

Re: odd question... maybe

Are you wanting to know if the tank in cab will fit in the bed?

Re: odd question... maybe

I know it will fit in the bed. I'm trying to design something to put the tank in, in the bed and I need to know the actual measurements, i.e. 40" x 20" x whatever ". I don't have my truck yet so I can't run outside and take the measurements.

Not going to fit in the stepside bed. Not side to side anyway.

Re: odd question... maybe

Although it wont fit, since you were willing to spend all those man hours fabricating a way to put it in the bed, why not do it correctly and put one under the truck where it needs to be? If you don't want to spend the money on a new conversion go get a junk yard Blazer or S10 tank and fab it where it wont be seen?!

Re: odd question... maybe

Willy FYI - If you go the route of building a tank keep in mind the weight you will have above the center of gravity. If you have a tank in the bed and have a 12" X 12" X 53" you will have about 210 Pounds in the bed and that could mess up and handling you might have.

Re: odd question... maybe

LMC has a new tank that mounts under the bed and the filler comes thru the floor for $200. That is the cheapest thing going.

Re: odd question... maybe

I installed the Blazer tank under the bed and brought the filler neck out into the driver side fender using one of the motorcycle filler caps. I would post photos if someone could walk me through the process. I have tried in the past without any success.

Sounds like you got the blazer tank with the angled neck. They built a new one that's like the blazer tank but the neck is straight up and designed to go thru the wood between the metal slats.

Re: odd question... maybe

Yes I did get one with the angle filler neck. I did have to flame bend the top flange of the frame. I used hose from Lowes that is rated for fuel and used a heat gun to help with the bending. And a great hand to McCoyAZ for helping me upload photos.

Re: odd question... maybe

when you say flame bend the flange - which flange are you talking about? Also I would like to know where you got the filler cap. Looks sweet. I have a 63 short fleet and I want to move my tank. I do not want to fill from the bed because I will be covering the bed and I work in NJ where they still pump your gas. The pump jockeys will rip my cover snaps faster than $hit.

Thanks for the cool post.

I took a torch to the top of the "C" portion of the frame and bent it down to gain some more clearance. I used an adjustable wrench and not a hammer so I could make it look it came from the factory. If you look at the last photo you can see where the filler hose comes over the frame. I got the filler cap from Speedway. A bit pricey but I only needed one for the look I wanted. I will have to say I do not know if it will work for a fleetside. Also a heads up on the cap itself. If you do not take a little time / brains someone could screw up the aluminum threads.

Re: odd question... maybe

cool. thankx for the info. good to know about the threads. i'll have to see what other options i have for a filler door. I thought about grafting one in from a car but that means body work and paint. I like the old retro camper style fuel doors that were used when aftermarket saddle tanks were installed. Pop rivets and all.
