Re: How to remove 66 deluxe steering wheel

On my 63 there are small screws behind the spokes on the wheel that hold the ring in place. Not sure if 66's are that way but have a look behind the wheel and there should be 5/16 or 1/4 hex head screws.

Re: How to remove 66 deluxe steering wheel

You need to use a steering wheel removal tool. You can find these at just about any parts store from $15.00 to $100.00. Kragen's & O'Rileys will usually let you borrow one for free providing you pay the cost of the tool as a returnable deposit up front. again, that is usually around $15.00.

Here's a how-to page I put together to do exactly what you're trying to do:http://www.64moneypit.pages.qpg.com/...cks/id108.html

Re: How to remove 66 deluxe steering wheel

El minero- I dont see any screws.
Hilandr451-very nice write up. i got puller for wheel.
I don't know how to remove horn ring. I think it's just pressed in there on a rubber sleeve , but I'm not sure. How hard do I pull/pry on horn ring.???

Re: How to remove 66 deluxe steering wheel

jack - you must pry (usually can do it by hand) the center cap off - then you'll see the 3 screws. Hard to tell the cap is removeable, but it is.

Re: How to remove 66 deluxe steering wheel

The very center of the horn ring pops out and there is a single nut that holds the steering wheel to the shaft, and 3 screws holding the horn ring. The picture below shows the main nut removed as I was going back together with the whole mess.

Make sure you don't loose this:

Or this:

After removing these items, you will find the threaded bolt holes to attach your puller to:

Make sure to remove the horn actuator button and the little spring inside before you pull the steering wheel off.

Re: How to remove 66 deluxe steering wheel

if its a deluxe model then you need to unscrew the 2 small screws on the backside of the wheel -you will see holes behind each spoke, one on each side, then it falls off

Re: How to remove 66 deluxe steering wheel

the wheel pictured above by hilandr is a deluxe (for 66) - so should be nothing more than prying off the center, then removing the 3 screws. Brawley - are you referring to a 65 & prior deluxe wheel? If so, I did not know that about them, thanks. I believe the 2 screws you are referring to are for prior years - what you described is the same attachment method for early 60's full size cars as well (i.e. 2 screws from behind wheel).

Re: How to remove 66 deluxe steering wheel

If you think theres a black rubber ring under it, then just pull it up with your hands. There are 3 types. One is like Hilandr451 shows. Another is like brawley said, with screws in from the back side. The 3rd is like i said. The rubber ring should come out with the cap. I dont have any pics, my stuff is packed away. Post up a pic of yours.

Re: How to remove 66 deluxe steering wheel

the horn will pull off,,it is usually a job for a 3 handed man ,,,just pull hard while having a screwdriver popped in the back prying at the same time,,,,then once all the cups and screws are undone,,,,and the 3/4 nut removed,,,most times you can rethread the nut most of the way back on to protect the threads and hit it really hard with a 20lb hammer while pulling the the steering wheel,,,this will usually pop most steering wheels off ,,,even those which have never been removed before,,if this does not work you will need to get a puller,,but they can be really hard on the plastic part of the wheel,,,just be carefull,,,but usually the bang and pull method works just fine,,,

Re: How to remove 66 deluxe steering wheel

I mean no disrespect to our Paphigliano, but I would highly recommend the $15.00 steering wheel puller over the "pop & pull" method. Trust me from personal experience, it is very easy to mushroom out the fine threaded steering shaft, even with the nut in place and pulling on the wheel while your buddy smacks the shaft with a 20lb sledge can be dangeruth to thay the leatht.

Question Re: How to remove 66 deluxe steering wheel

SO, to remove "HORN CAP", (not steering wheel)......

To remove "HORN CAP" on a 1966 Chevy C10,...you are all suggesting that
it needs to be "pried off" ?

I dont want to crack my Horn Cap..........it doesnt seen to want to snap out.

Any more suggestion...?

Yes, the 1966 Deluxe steering wheel is the same the early Nova/Chevy II steering wheels (I owned a '63 Chevy II for 30+ years). Pull the center cap off that is held in place by a spring steel retainer just as Hilandr451 noted and pictured in his post. This gives you access to the fasteners to remove the horn ring.

This steering wheel, correct?

Thank You Vin63!

And yes it's the same exact steering wheel in your post, except I have a 3 In A Tree Column Shift.
