Your guys thoughts

Ok so I bought a 70 lwb, po spent good money building and stroking 305 to 335, however he painted it ford puke blue, what do you guys think. Pull motor paint it the correct color or pull motor and put in 350 since I'm not really a 305 guys.. however I will give the 305 props it sounds good and does one hell of job ruining back tires lol

Re: Your guys thoughts

Looks close to corporate blue. I think in the 80s they where blue. But if it is ford blue then please repaint. Even of you swap it out. As for the color I would go truck red. Every one does orange.

Re: Your guys thoughts

Personally I would leave it and instead get a fan shroud and replace that crappy fuel line with a proper (safe) one. Then maybe run a cold air intake since you are giving up HP sucking in hot air from the radiator. If it runs good and doesn't leave a smoke screen etc. I would just run it. Fix the heater if it gets real cold there.

1977-81/82 was blue. #221 Blue from Plasticote is close I hear.

X2, it's like you were reading my mind. Maybe it's not the best color but is it worth pulling the engine to repaint? And if it runs that well, why replace it? Fix a few minor things and enjoy it.

I would paint it in place, remove accessories, tape off, spray all that can be seen, just did one and it looks great.

Re: Your guys thoughts

it's your truck to do with what you want, but if you thought it was a 350 motor
in there would you be happy with the way it runs, sounds, lights up the back tires?

Re: Your guys thoughts

i'd put that money towards other upgrades and wait until it needs the motor

replaced, then you can put in what ever size you want it to be! just saying!

Don't waste money on rattle cans for that motor, spend it on a couple more burner tires!

I'd just run it. Can't see what color the engine is when your driving.

Re: Your guys thoughts

I do not know what kind of market there is for a hot 305, but you could explore selling it to a 305 lover and bulding your 350 (or whatever). A small stroked 305 would be alot of engine for small car enthusiast.

On the flip side, it sounds like it's doing the truck right, but, depending on how picky you are...the blue paint is a bit out of the norm. I'd pull it and paint it black or orange if I was building a truck with even mild show capabilties, but if it's just for me and no show...blue is my favorite color.

Re: Your guys thoughts

If it’s a daily driver and you’re not gonna be poppin the hood at car shows, leave it like it is and spend the money and time on more important things. If it craps out, replace it then with what you want. If it’s as stout as you say, there’s no reason at all to swap to a 350 - a stocker 350 compared to the stroked 305 might disappoint you. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. I’m either a full resto -or- bare minimum keep it going investment sorta guy.

Re: Your guys thoughts

I'm not a 305 guy either. I have never owned one. But if I had a truck that came with one, especially one someone put something into, I'd just run it until the truck got to where that was the only thing it needed. As far as the color? If it bugs you then paint it. No need to pull it to do that.

A friend of mine says the person picking that apart is in the perfect position for a boot where the sun dont shine. Enjoy your old truck who cares what color the engine is.

Re: Your guys thoughts

I've run a couple of 305s in other vehicles, properly tuned with a mild cam, they scoot pretty good for what it is and gets decent mileage. I had an 85 with one that got 16mpg. Had no problem getting up to 65 on the freeway. So a stroker 305 ?? must be pretty torquey. What type of mileage you getting with that? I agree, fix what you got, clean it up, fix the heater, install power steering and power brakes.

Re: Your guys thoughts

If that is an Edelbrock/Carter carb you can actually buy a metal pump to carb line. I think Right Stuff makes them and I came across it at Summit.

Technically, you don’t own a 305 either. Personally, I would detail the motor with the period correct Chevy orange and drive it.

Re: Your guys thoughts

You asked... Sounds like you are looking for an excuse to pull out a perfectly good running, tire frying small block. You either don't like the displacement because others have told you 305s are not any good, or it is under performing. Sounds to me like it is performing just fine. Color? Thats a personal preference. The best thing to do is to follow your gut on this one. You dig into that engine bay for a 50 dollar cleanup and you are liable to end up with a $4500 rebuild.
