Frame Coatings?

I would like to cover/ paint my 66 frame by myself. I have the brush on products narrowed down to POR15, or Zero Rust. Any thoughts on either one. Pros and cons, or another product. I have cleaned the frame down by scraping and wire brushing. I just don't want to go the route of sandblasting and primer epoxy. Trying to do this in my own shop. Thanks for you thoughts.

Re: Frame Coatings?

I have used por 15, and have been happy.

Don't take off all the rust it needs some to bond too.

Throughly degrease the chassis. Nu Calgon blue cleaner works awesome for that. Then wipe away cleaner residue with acetone or E85 what ever you got.

I am looking at eastwood chassis black for the next time I try painting a frame.

Re: Frame Coatings?

I've never used either one of those coatings.I have heard so many bad things about por15 I would be Leary about using it.I have used rust-oleum and it seems to hold up good and it's way cheaper than por15.

Re: Frame Coatings?

I used KBS Coatings https://www.kbs-coatings.com/
I brushed it on and it turned out great.

Re: Frame Coatings?

Thanks for all your thoughts on this issue. I will look into the KBS product, and Eastwoods products. What would be the negatives of using the POR15? I was thinking about brushing this on and then covering it with some kind of chassis black paint.

Re: Frame Coatings?

if your gonna use poor15 then it needs to be rusty..basically your burying rust under it..and..itll easily flake of clean metal..
i wouldnt recommend using it..
i know you dont want to but clean metal and epoxy would be better...then put your paint on

Re: Frame Coatings?

Well, looks like I won't be using POR15. That's some pretty convincing testimony. I know the most correct way to do this is to have it blasted, then epoxy primer and paint. Just didn't want to go through all of taking the frame down to the skeleton. Again, thanks for all your expertise on this.

Re: Frame Coatings?

The most anti-corrosive system there is it's called a Three coat polyurethane system .The base primer is an aluminum pigmented moisture cured single component primer. It is activated by humidity ,it completely cuts off any moisture and the aluminum flake in two coats cuts the oxygen. Primer will do 8000 hours of salt spray, around 700 for epoxy. If the aluminum pigmented permanent rust sealer is scratched the rust will not travel beyond the scratch. If you scratch the epoxy the rust will travel. When you tighten fasteners down and chip the paint the rust will travel. Mobay's permanent rust sealer primer is the father of the products you see sold in the automotive hobby. The problem was they eliminated the aluminum flake and substituted black pigment., and 3 other companies followed, now it's no longer airtight. As rust forms under the coating and then it peels off. Buy a can of the clear moisture cured rust sealer and it will begin to rust within six weeks. Clear moisture cured urethane is for concrete because it breathes, add black pigment it's still breathing . if it breathes it'll eventually rust GoodLuck with your project.
