NP205 paint

I was paging thru the np205 rebuild thread at the top of the forum, and it looked like the inside of the case was painted. Was this intentional, or just a messy painter at the factory.
If it was intentional, what kind of paint would hold up to constant hot oil immersion?
Im rebuilding a 205/th400.

Re: NP205 paint

Did a little more surfing and it looks like Glyptal, Armature paint, electric motor paint all would do the job.
But that still leaves the question... is it painted inside intentionally ?

Re: NP205 paint

This is what I use. It helps oil drain back and fills rough and uneven surfaces without cracking and chipping.

http://search.eastwood.com/search?w=Glyptol

Engine enamels should work as well for a little cheaper. I've used them in the past without any real issues to report. I think they can flake easier tho without a real good surface prep. Surface prep being a darn good washing and zero oil residue. Leave the casting rough for bite. Some like to polish the surface smooth which does not help the "bite" for the paint. Also, brush on only, toss the aerosol can.

Where's the link to your build? It's been a while since I visited it. I remember you have an enjoyable build.

Re: NP205 paint

eh, maybe it wasn't a build thread rather just some odds and ends works I had read through the years. memory escapes me.

ya, the Glyptol is a little pricey but works well.

I want to know if GM painted them intentionally... or sloppy employee with a spray gun.
I dont think quick oil return was the idea for painting them. Maybe keep sand and loose cast iron in place. Or maybe it was to keep the inside of the case from rusting in case of water infiltration. Or .....maybe....the foreman's son with no skills needed a job.

Re: NP205 paint

Well I thought the link was self explanatory, meaning no they weren't painted intentionally and why choose to paint the inside anyway.

Re: NP205 paint

There is a good reason for Glyptol, to aide oil in draining back to bottom to be picked up again, rather than slowly because of rough cast surface. It's up to you if it's worth the bother. I don't think GM went to the expense for us. It's an over and above improvement that many, including gm bean counters, will say is not worth the bother. I say, if it's torn down and cleaned up, why not?
