Re: 70 C/10 from Cali to Illinois

Now it was time to take it back to my cousins place get it ready for the engine install. I had the block cleaned, bead blasted, honed and the front cam bearing surface repaired and cam bearings, like I said earlier the front cam bearing spun but luckily it wasn’t run very long. I also got a new crank, the pistons were new so I reused them and we figured they were 9 -1 because they were complete flat tops, I got a new Summit cam SUM-1788 it is pretty close to the 350hp 327 cam it says it will be a little lope, rings , bearings new lifters, a 2 piece timing cover, Mr Gasket ,Gasket set, new main bolts and head bolts, which I got GM Performance ones and they were only $35 through my local Chevy dealer, and a Remanufactured Summit 600cfm Carb SUM-RM08600VS, summit Ceramic headers and a few other things. The 72 engine had Aluminum valve covers and an Accel high voltage HEI Distributors with 10mm wires, I picked up the Air Gap Manifold for $100 on craigs list. It took a month wait to get to the engine because this Summer was so hot but we finally got it done . We got it started last weekend and it does sound healthy. The 72 also had new clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing in it so I got a lot of good parts out of it. And that is where I am to day with it. I’m going to the Junk Yard tomorrow to pull the brackets and pulleys off a mid 80’s truck so every thing lines up for some reason they aren’t lining up with the mix of pulleys between the 70 and 72 I am also going to pull the PS pump just to make sure every thing aligns.

Here is my cousin working diligently on it

Here he is telling me I am #1

Done Before Paint

In the truck

Re: 70 C/10 from Cali to Illinois

I got the pulleys , PS pump, Alt, Fan, and all the brackets off an 85 or 86 Impala so I started putting it together with the long shaft water pump, the PS pump brackets were giving me problems with headers so I checked the old one it lined up perfectly then I put the Alt brackets on and that relocated it to the right side. The Alt plug had 3 wires coming so instead of reinventing the wheel I checked the old Alt and it fit with the spacer that came with new one so I mounted it and swapped the pulleys and all fit. The fan was to big for the shroud so the old one went back on all belts lien up . Now I have an extra alt, PS Pump and Fan I can't use so craigslist here I come.

Mounted the radiator and support from the 72 we put gas in her and after a few try’s she fired up and sounded sweet a little lumpy from the cam but very responsive. I have Cherry Bombs that bolt on to the headers for now but will be changed out with 2.5” exhaust all the way back. The next thing will be putting the front end on and making it where I can drive it on the trailer my cousin wants to kick me out so he can start working on his snowmobile.

Very nice! Snow mobile? Those are fun but every time I own one, it either won't snow or the dang snow mobile wouldn't run!

Re: 70 C/10 from Cali to Illinois

Congrats! Felt good to finally hear and feel it run? I was just there couple weeks ago. I too got kicked out of the shop, but at least I can walk outside my house now to work on the truck, which is so much fun. But, now I am noticing all the other little details that need to be done. Got the time just need more money! Good luck you will be driving it down the road soon.

Hearing her come alive was great got the heart pumping a little faster and at 63 I gotta watch that stuff. My problem is I have the money just can't find the time and with winter getting ready to set in I need to get as much done as I can before the real cold gets here, then she will go to my brothers barn unless I clean out my garage and where I can actually put 2 cars in it. My wife gets to park in it in the winter then gets kicked out in the spring.

If I don't get a call on the trailer I want to buy I will be going over today and we will be setting the front clip on.

Thanks! Got the front clip on last weekend, now I have to do some rewiring since I went to the long shaft water pump and moved the alt to the right side. Picked up a used 2002 Imperial trailer Tuesday so now I need to get that checked out before I get back to the truck looks like this one but not as nice paint. It will make hauling the truck a lot easier than with the Bob Cat trailer.

Re: 70 C/10 from Cali to Illinois

Ok finally got some work done on it I am almost done with re wiring the Alt, spliced and soldered all the connections and re routed them down the right side of the radiator to the in side if the frame then up to the Alt for a cleaner look. I am putting all the wiring in the plastic conduit. I still haven't decided on interior color for the seat & carpet either blue or black. Going over tonight to mount the seat so I can pull it out to winterize it on Saturday, It really is a PIA to go over to someone else’s house to work on it. Here are some Pic's.

Looks great! I know what you mean about having to go somewhere else to work on the truck. Its like you feel that you can't go and work on it whenever you want to. Plus, not count the trip there and back. I was taking a 45min one way trip for 3 months.

i think the tires would look fine if you just lowered it a little, that would make them look a little more proportional

I would like to tuck them in a little more also but I have all winter to figure it out. There is an American Racing warehouse close by that my nephews trucking co. moved, they told him they would give him a discount on any wheels he wanted I might have to get that favor from him

Yes, the rubber is a little short. You can always put a 3/4 drop on it.
