'99 Silverado Tranny Rebuild ?

A friend of mine has a '99 Silverado 4.8L 4wd and the manual tranny is starting to make noise...sounds like the input and/or output bearing is going out. From what I can find online this should be a NV3500. Are there any special tools require to rebuild this tranny? I've redone a few older manual trannys but wanted to make sure before I tore this thing apart.

Thanks,

Derek

There are some special tools but IIRC you can get by without them with a little ingenuity.
