My First Truck

Hello, . I recently got myself my first truck, and I just got it this Monday. It's a 1985 truck with the High Sierra trim level. The color of the truck is tan. It has a manual transmission in it, and can go 20 in like 2 seconds. Rims on it are Dodge, but they're coming apart, and the tires are shot on it. I've started looking for rims, but the original 8 lugs are hard to find. Otherwise, very solid, very cool truck. Can't wait to start working on it.

Here's some more info about it:
Drive: 2WD
Engine: 350 V8 HD
Series: 3/4 Ton (20/25)
Plant Manufactured: Janesville, WI
GVW Range/Brake System: 8,001-9,000
Body: 2 Door Long Box

Re: My First Truck

There're some things that I have concerning my 85 GMC truck:

1. Did the High Sierra trim level have the cab corner trim pieces that say "GMC?"

2. Anyone know where I can find the original 8 lug rims for it?

3. Where can you find the list that has all of the vehicle options on it (i.e. tinted glass, running boards, etc.)?

4. Are the rings (on the truck box) for strapping stuff down an original option or custom?

5. Did the tail light wires originally run through a hole in the truck box floor?

6. Did the High Sierra trim level come with a brushed aluminum cluster gauge dash bezel?

Re: My First Truck

Not sure about your other questions, but the tie down rings and running boards are aftermarket add-ons. There should be a sticker in the glove box with the options on it.

Re: My First Truck

My dad and I started doing some work on the truck. We got the original rims put back on, and we've changed out one of the door locks (the old ones didn't have a key for them, so we're putting in a set that has a matching key; the driver's side is in, but not the passenger side). I also threw in a different grille and headlight doors, because I ordered new ones (the grille and headlight doors were broken in several spots). Here's a couple pics:

Also, does anyone know of any special editions for the 1985 GMC trucks? I know there was the Wrangler.

Re: My First Truck

Here are my options listed in the glove box.
I was wondering more about these options on mine:
1. B3W preliminary price interior
2. V22 deluxe front appearance
3. XYN LT235/85R -16E TBL HY
4. YYN LT235/85R -16E TBL HY
5. ZY1 Solid paint
6. 61L 61 doeskin tan solid
7. 62W X551 saddle tan custom
Also, I thought it was cool how my GMC emblem in my steering wheel turned purple.

Re: My First Truck

Good news! I ordered a new grille and headlight doors for my truck, and they came today! It's the original style because I want to try to keep this truck as original as possible. I don't think I'm going to put them in yet because I don't want them to get broken while my dad and I work on it. Here's some pics:

Re: My First Truck

Love the truck! Very nice score. It looks much better with the factory wheels. That thing was a towing machine when new with the 4.10 gears, SM465, and 350. I'm sure it wouldn't want to run 80 on the interstate for very long though.
It looks extremely rust free. What are of the country do you live?

Re: My First Truck

Got the new grille and headlight doors in. Touched up all of the emblems, except the dash emblem. I helped my dad replace the exhaust system; the old one was rusted out.

Hahaha, that narrows it down. No need to be more specific than you are comfortable with tho.

The truck is great. Clean and original. The wheels w hubcaps look great. Good progress on improving things a little at a time. Pulling the running boards off if you don't use them would unclutter the side view. In answer to your question, taillight wiring should come from underneath the bed into the bed corners. Shouldn't be visible anywhere inside the bed.
