Re: 77 k10 short box winter beater build

Looks great. Having trucks with both styles of mirrors, I prefer the dumbos. I think a set of white dumbo mirrors would look great. What bumpers are you going to run?

I'm not sure how they did it at the factory, for me it seemed alot easier to mask off a white stripe to paint the blue, vs trying to mask everything blue, to paint the white.

The bumpers are chrome. The tripods, and dumbo mirrors I have are stainless. I wonder if the tripods would put less stress on the door, with the wider mounting points. These aftermarket doors are VERY light weight.

Are you going to put nutserts in the doors for the mirrors?

My plan was to use nutserts if I used dumbo mirrors. The shhet metal is pretty thin though. For the tripod mirrors, I was just going to bolt them on, backed up with fender washers.

Now that I think of it, I only have 1 set of dumbo braces, they are going on the 80. That might just make the decision for me.

Re: 77 k10 short box winter beater build

That'll look good with chrome bumpers and shiny mirrors. I think my dumbo mirror door panels flex less than the tripod mirrors but that could just be the doors on my crew being more solid than the plow truck.

I was just curious. We just redid my boss's 86 dump truck at work but it has the big mirrors that mount top and bottom. The factory doors had nutserts for the lower mounts but we skinned the doors so I had to put new nutserts in the new skins. Either way you do it, I suggest putting some strip caulk or something similar around the hole because the dump truck had big rust stains on the doors coming from where the mirrors bolted on and it even still had the original stainless hardware

Re: 77 k10 short box winter beater build

If I use the tripod mirrors, I was planning on using some rubber washers between the door and mirrors. I hot it out of the shop under its own power today. Took it around the block, and my first th350 rebuild seems to be a success!!! It seemed to shift good, I know that around the block isn't a real test, but so far so good. Doors, fenders, and trim are installed. Getting excited to get it done now.

Looks amazing great work. What are you thinking for a fuel door? Looks like you have the body work skills to put something stock looking a little further back.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet. I haven't taken a serious look at the box yet. I jumped around the box pulling bolts. About half of the 6 or 7 bolt came out, the others broke, or twised the rusty metal out. The floor is pretty shot, but the rear cross member is real bad. When I get the hood done, and get the glass, and mirrors on the doors, I'll get the box on a stand and figure out what to do. If it's to bad I will fall back to my flatbed plan.

Re: 77 k10 short box winter beater build

I think it's time to take some shop cleaning time. There is not a flat surface left to work on right now. I'm normally pretty anal about keeping the shop clean, and the tools put away. It's seems easy to pile up stuff when you're making progress. I have had 3 trucks and a car in here before, now I'm tripping over stuff in here with only 1 truck in here.

Very good work! Trim really sets it off and the mirrors look right at home. Man the bigger the shop the more crap you can scatter all over it!

Re: 77 k10 short box winter beater build

With beater in the title of this thread, I had figured on liberal use of tie wire and old road signs, etc. I couldn't have been more wrong. This truck is beautiful. The blue, the white, the stainless trim with the gold color. If this is a beater, i don't want to know what my truck is, haha. Anyway, I know you've prepped it well to be your DD. Very cool.

Thanks Mike, the front and rear gaps are ok, the top and bottom gaps are huge though. The aftermarket doors fit pretty bad, so I just settled for a happy spot where everything looks ok. I'll be happy if it turns out a nice 10 footer. As far as "beater" goes, it's got a huge called shut sunroof, aftermarket panels that fit so so, a 6 banger with a np203, so so interior, and a cheap rustolieum paint job. Lipstick on a pig comes to mind. It should be warm and reliable though. This is a good build to show you can build a decent truck pretty cheap.
