steering gear boxes

My 83 has crossover steering and thus a 2wd gearbox it also has vac assist brakes. The 86 K30 I am taking parts off of has hydro boost brakes with a 4wd gearbox.

Are the steering gear boxes different between the vac assist and hydro boost brakes?

I want to swap the following from the 86 into my 83:

Pedal assembly, hydro boost assembly and the power steering pump. I want to keep the 2wd steering gear box. With them both in the 80s I think they have the metric fittings on the hoses.

Thanks,

Re: steering gear boxes

I'm pretty sure the steering box is the same except for the extra port for the brakes.

Re: steering gear boxes

There is no difference at all between gearboxes. 1980 and below will be SAE fittings and metric for 81 up. As far as the power steering pump it will have 2 return ports in the reservoir in a hydro-boost setup...nice but it's no big deal to use the standard single return pump and T in your return line from hydro-boost. In fact GM did this themselves on some vehicles like the P30 chassis.

Re: steering gear boxes

Thanks for the replies. I plan on swapping the booster/pump/pedals from the 86 K30 to the 83 k20.

Re: steering gear boxes

I added hydroboost a couple of months ago and it was probably the easiest mod I have done. I had custom hoses made at a NAPA store. I paid a little more for the hoses than I really wanted but when I installed them it was exactly what I was shooting for. I kept my original steering gear.
