'64 EFI Rear Tank Options Help - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have done a lot of searching on a EFI compatible rear fuel tank for my '64. I just haven't been able to find everything that I am looking for in one tank. I would like to find a rear mount tank that doesn't hang down like a soggy diaper yet still offers decent range (20gal?), is compatible with EFI, compatible with a fuel sending unit to work with my 5.3 ECM, is not a bed floor fill, and doesn't cost $400 for just the tank.

I thought about the blazer tank as it is inexpensive, has a side fill, holds a decent amount of fuel, and can be bought with mounting straps. BUT, I don't like how it hangs down, don't know if it can be use with EFI, and if the fuel sending unit is compatible with my 5.3 ECM.

Can you guys help me with some ideas that should work?

Sounds like a custom tank is in your future.

You can use a universal tank or a vehicle specific tank.

I have also heard of guys using the '87-'91 Blazer or Suburban tanks. I'm just not sure if either of those will work in a short wheelbase truck.

Those links are helpful. It looks like some guys use early (1953'is) fuel tanks with decent results? Looks like a decent option for the cost if it goes together well.

I was facing the same dilemma, and I knew I didn't want to have a tank that hung below the bumper so I started this thread. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=621177 I'm glad I did because in the end I got everything I wanted. Edit: wow I just looked back at that link and noticed how many pics that photobucket revoked. What a drag.

I didnt like the look or the fit of the blazer tank so I got a tank from a 87 or 88 work van. The van had a TBI motor in it so the sending unit was already setup for an intank pump. Its a 20 gallon tank. It hangs down about 7 in at the deepest point and the back of the tank tapers up, which makes it look nice from the back.

I had to trim the bottom part of my frame rails about 1/4 inch for it to fit. I also had to move the rear crossmember back a couple of inches. I took it to an old school radiator/ gastank shop and had them soldered up the orignial filler neck and soldered in a new one on the top so the filler hose goes between the top of the frame rail and the bed. Then cut a hole in it to add a 0-30 ohm sending unit (20 bucks) for our stock gauge. I then loaded it up with an ep381 gm high pressure pump and its been supplying my 5.3 without any issues for over 10 yrs now.

I think it's based off a limitation. After so many photos, photobucket hides the rest.
I now just post my pictures through the tools these forums provide.

The '87 GM van tank (p/n GM-8C) also has a built-in pan to prevent fuel starvation. I plan on using the same one for my swap.

Well the pics showed up when i tried it out last night hahah..

Anyways my setup still works bout 11yrs later, It was best solution i found with out having a custom tank made...

The plan for the filler neck was to bend up some sheet metal and incorporate it in with the stake pocket..
