72 cab on 73 up frame ?

Is it possible with way too much work ?

Its possible if your able to do the welding to convert a 67 72 cab floor to a 73 87 cab floor

Definitely possible, I’ve seen several trucks converted to 4x4 via a 73+ frame swap. I’ve not done it myself but I do know the wheel bases on the 73+ Are longer than the 67-72’s. When most people do the swap they don’t use the center rear cab mounts that the 73+ cabs use, instead they modify/reuse the original rear 67-72 mounts or fab new ones. Be advised that the cab will most likely require a small body lift to keep the sheet metal level as the 73+ frames bend quite a bit deeper under the cab than the 67-72’s do.
