Using Crown Vic 8.8 rear differential in '68

Does any one have any experience or information on using an 8.8 rear differential from a Crown Vic?
I think the direction I'm going is use a '95 up to an '02 police car rear end. Limited slip and disc brakes.

I'm no expert but since I have time to kill I'll run my fingers a little.

Those cop 8.8s were usually 3.27-1 but occasionally you can find 3.55-1. CVs (and Merc. Grand Marq) with the "handling and performance"package (what a joke that is!) also came with 3.27s.Regular CVs had 2.73s.

Don't know anything about what engine you are running or what size tires you are planning but I "think" there are ways to beef these 8.8s up with chrome moly axles and a c-clip eliminator kit and maybe weld up the tubes.

Now for the guys that actually know something.....

That 8.8 can be made strong......IMHO, if you spend the cash, I would go 9" Ford. We have a guy in town, that has cut & build the 9" rear, for 30 + yrs, as well as building street rods/drag stuff! Rob is good....not trying to plug the guy, but I do know where to go on the driveline stuff around here Longhorn

You guys do realize that a Ford 8.8" rear end is basically Fords copy of a GM 12 bolt. I am not sure whether the width would work but the Explorer rear end is 31 spline axles, 3.73 with a limited slip and disk brakes. Maybe a better option?
