Have you set your mind on the colors yet because I saw a 56 that was somekind of charcoal/dark grey and white and it really stood out!

Something like this font?

I am not set on colors yet... will eventually have to dial something in; especially if some of the work projects in the pipeline come to fruition... could be ready this time next year.

I say the orange one and run steel rims with the bel air hub caps if you can pull that off.

I really like the grey and white with the black trim ! This color combo could really go through time without looking out of style.

Re: BABA YAGA! 1974 Bel Air Concept...

I would go with no drop and stock wheels and hub caps to complete the look:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1956-CHEVROL...-/291441467617

Maybe even wide white wall tires.

So.... what's next, the hood ornament?
Might try putting the company logo on the door... maybe not.

I really hate to say this, but the more I look at it, the more it grows on me... I will be sunk once my daughter sees the WW's. She thinks they belong on everything.

This is becoming a design-by-committee project! Might be fun to see where it goes. Never thought of turning the design over to a bunch of yahoo's with grease under their fingernails...

That had a nice look to it. I still like the upkick on the chrome to start later on the bed, and the white cab top.

Re: BABA YAGA! 1974 Bel Air Concept...

Excellent.

I am about ready to sign off on the design - just need to see how the rear tail lights will be handled - grafted 56 Chevy lights in place of stock wrap around square tail lights? 56 hood ornament would be nice.

Don't forget the resto-mod rear view mirrors.

I am torn on the molding... I think it could use a little more push to the back. I want to make sure that it keeps the profile in 'balance' and doesn't look too abbreviated in the back and too heavy to the front. That's why two-tone's have a dark/light combination; to keep the proportions balanced visually. Where do you think it should be stopped?

As for the white top... I'm still not sure about that. I kinda want to keep the emphasis on the swoosh fill color and not take the eyes away too soon or have them bounce around the truck too fast.

Overboard is the key word. I want to keep it more 1974 SB than '56 BelAir, but have subtle hints here and there. I can see the rear view mirrors but not sure on the hood ornament.

As for the gas access, I would love to keep the '74 SB tail lights and have the drivers side swing open for access to the cap. That's the blending of both worlds I would like to accomplish.

I am also trying to design things that require a minimum of costly custom work, so I have to think long and hard about the dash. If I did that swap, I would definitely have to cut back on other outsourced custom work. I think I can pull off the tail light/gas cap mod myself, and a good amount of things are pretty much a bolt on affair... Custom paint and upholstery will soak up most of the budget.

I have more than 20 paint combinations archived. At some point, I will upload them and get some feedback. The classic Red/White is hard to beat, but some of color iterations are pretty competitive in their own right.

Re: BABA YAGA! 1974 Bel Air Concept...

post #15 has the correct "look" as far as the chrome and the top for me. i would add the chrome strip around the sides and back of the cab. that will give you even more of a correct look, as the 56's have a chrome piece between the roof and the rear quarters.

i like the white top because the 56's all had the roof painted to match the "billboards".

1, 2, & 5 are all nice color combos. it would be cool to use the factory colors from the pickup also!

Re: BABA YAGA! 1974 Bel Air Concept...

X2 on the white top, but I am also in favor of a more 56 look.

The body side in your drawings does not show a square body wrap around tail light - looks more like a 67-72 tail light. Actually, a 67-72 might be a better vehicle for this mod, since it has more 50's rounded corners. Either way, I think the 56 tail light housings would fit recessed into the square tail light openings with a little elongation, and maybe some cut and weld work. The tail lights are integral to the 56 look - but you said you want to keep the square look, so ...

I would keep the stock side gas tank access. The gas access via rear tail light would be non-functional. I would not want to relocate the gas tank and filler neck just for that, and you can still keep the factory spare location.

Re: BABA YAGA! 1974 Bel Air Concept...

I decided to try the Golden Ratio in laying out the molding on the middle image. I used the '56 image below. GM was close to the Golden Ratio but it depends on what all is measured... bumpers, etc. So, using the 1.618 formula, I placed the molding kick-up at the calculated location on the middle image.

I am wrestling with going white on the cab because it looks chopped up to me. I think it's because the traditional '56 had the white top coming up from the white on the side of the car making for a "continuation" of the flow... but truck cab does not extend back to a point that would accomplish the same thing.

Also, the white on the '56 starts just behind the drivers door a few inches, which is where I started the initial layout on the truck at the top. That location doesn't follow the Golden Ratio or the ratio on the '56. I wonder if is partly due to the truck being a long bed. I was planning on sectioning the C20 to make it a short box, which would pretty much eliminate the body color between the cab and the bed... effectively moving the white section forward almost to the cab. I tried to replicate the drawing for a SWB in the bottom image, but I didn't have time to do it justice... but I think I got close enough to get the idea across.

I am open to comments or suggestions...

I also have to keep in mind that I am trying to show BelAir influences and not faithfully recreate a '56 BelAir. I think the phrase "less is more" sums it up.

Short box and needs to be lowered. Lots of cool color options. WW and steelies probably fit the build but some billet wheels would look killer.

I think I will start posting using the SWB, since that's the direction I want to head in. I also have some color combinations worked up. Trying to find the best way to post them for reactions or input without taking up a lot of thread space. Maybe sometime this weekend. Will need some reactions to weed out the bad ones and narrow down the field.
