question about pro topline heads
i visited another board last night and asked about what was the best head to use on my 406. i mentioned that i was leaning toward the afr 190 heads. one guy told me that the pro topline lightning heads were just as good as the afr's but much cheeper and that i should go with those the one her reccomended were the 200 or the 220 for my 406 to make 450 hp and 450 plus tq. what do you guys think and has anyone used the pro toplines heads and what is the combo 383 or 406 or what ever it may be. i

I've heard just the opposite, a friend of mine run a local machine shop and he said the Topline are overated because of the price, also check out ryanscarpage.50megs.com some of the engine combos and the power they make with them are awesome. His page and the AFR website sold me on my next set of heads. I'll be getting the AFR 195's

I am using the protopline 200cc/50cc chamber heads. I had them on a 385..now on a 355..they are going on my 406 this winter. I think the afrs are a little better..are they 400.00 better?? I dont know. They are readily available..the afrs take months to get. You can easily make 450hp/tq with the 200cc heads. I will be over 550hp with my combo(13-1 c/r) One thing..order the heads through a speed/machine shop bare..and have them build them. It works out to about the same price and better QC. The first set the shop got in for me had a bad exhaust seat..it wasn't real bad..but they got me another set

I have a set of aluminum pro toplines 200cc 64cc chambers they cost me a little under $1200.00 assembled. I am verry happy with them.

pro1s are nice too...the toplines flow better out of the box though

a friend of mine has a 406 with flat top pistons, the 72cc pro 1 215 runner heads and a isky 304 mega hyd. cam. it`s in a 64 chevelle but it`s got a 3,000rpm stall and 4.11 gears and it runs well into the 11 second zone. i had a set of 215 runner afr heads that i bought bare and had a guy port,polish and set up for roller cam. never used them but they were good heads and the guy that did them liked the flow numbers he got from them. it`s all in the combo, match the heads to the cam and compression and your motor will make plenty of power whichever heads you use.

thanks for the feedback guys. to be honest with you all am torn between the afr that i have always known about to be good heads and the pro toplines that i just found out about and that are a couple hundred dollars cheeper and put out just as much power as the afr's. so looks like i will be looking at the two very hard. oh yeah i do believe you get what you pay for, but i also like to get a good deal if i can so i am kinda undecided between the two.

I'm thinking of the pro topline 50cc heads for my truck. 355 8.5-1 comp now but going to the 50cc heads your talking 10.5-1 or more. I was thinking of getting them for my race car and still might because with a flat top piston you get a better burn rate for fuel and with the small chambers you can make 12.5-1. For like 400 you can get the haeds and buy a kit with valves and everything for 125 and have less than what they want for an assembled head provided you know how to put them togather and have the tools.

Im building a 383 that should be around 500hp I looked at the options and went with the afr 210s. Everyone I see using the afr always run hard. For a couple hundred bucks you dont want to wonder what if. Good luck
