What is my Engine?

From the number 3896944 I deduced it is a 283.
Does the other casting tell us the date?

Re: What is my Engine?

Doing more research on this site:
http://chevellestuff.net/qd/block_casting_by_year.htm

3896944 1967 283 195 Tonawanda cast block was used only for the 1967 model year and was the last 283 design.

.
Maybe my block was cast July 1966 and then used in a 1967 vehicle?

Re: What is my Engine?

The casting date is in the second pic - is it C76? That should translate to March 7th of '66.

Yes, I'm pretty sure now that it was cast in 66. The part that was confusing me was most sites were putting the 3896944 as a 1967 engine, but because it's either G76 or C76 it must have been put in a 67 that was built in 66. Kinda like my 2010 CRV I bought in 2009.

Re: What is my Engine?

March of '66 is pretty early to be correct for a '67. July is probably possible but someone sharper on such things than me will have to confirm.

Re: What is my Engine?

The casting date is just that, the day it was cast. That does not mean that it was machined and assembled right away. Whether it is a '66 or a '67 makes no difference IMO.

What I do gather from all this is the motor isn't the one my 65 would have originally came with.

No, just was curious if what I have is the original engine that came with my 65.
I see now it's not.

Re: What is my Engine?

Not just any 305 heads. The 416 heads are off the high output motor. They are the ones you want. I use them myself on the 283 in my '66.
