What year did chevrolet/ gmc transition from Orange engine paint to blue?

I have a 77 Silverado that has an orange 454. I'm guessing it's an early year 77 model and they changed to blue sometime that year. My 78 Cheyenne 454 was GM blue.
I did, for nostalgic sake, paint my 8.1 GM blue from Bill Hirsch.

IIRC 1978 was the transition year to all blue engines. In 1977 the 350 and 454 engines were still painted Chevrolet orange while the 305 and smaller engines were painted blue.

hmm, I had a 77 C-10 Silverado back in 1984 that my dads buddy bought brand new, It had never been touched with 56K miles on it. The truck had a 305 and the engine was blue. One of my buddies dad had a 77 C-10 Scottsdale at the same time about the same miles IIRC. It had a 350 and the engine was Chevrolet orange. Neither truck had ever had the engines out at that time. Maybe a mid year change or possibly a plant thing ??

My 77 is an April build. And Oshawa built if that helps.

I'm not 100% for sure but, if I was a gambling man I would be betting on it being a Oshawa built truck thing.

I don't have any idea where either truck was built but, I do remember the engines being different colors and thought how odd it was.

There is bound to be some overlap to use up the orange engines. I have no doubt a few 77's got orange engines.
