Re: Good Neighbors.
I actually thought about just going in his backyard, and when he asked what I'm doing, answer "Just looking for something I don't like, so I can destroy it".

I would do what 68Gold/white suggested and plant another tree. Maybe a little bigger and in a little farther, but make sure it blocks his view (whatever that is). Make sure the foliage goes all the way to the ground too. LockDoc

He just needs to be enlightened on the dos and don'ts of personal property and it's best to wait till cool...really cool...to confront him. It's all just a matter of fact thing and that is how it needs to be handled.

Re: Good Neighbors.
Well I guess one of us should ask. Did someone see that guy do this or have you assumed he did it?

Re: Good Neighbors.
The cut one of his trees will make him think. We had 80 acres of woods back in Indiana and a fellow that owned an acre or two beside us would come in and dig up saplings for his yard. I would have taken the backhoe out there and dug him some big ones if he would have asked but he didn't. So as I'm digging up their flowers in their flower beds one Saturday afternoon his wife comes out yelling and screaming at me, I calming asked where they got their trees from. She pointed and said that "abandoned woods over there". I told her that woods belonged to me and when you replant my trees I will replant your flowers. She slammed the door as I put more flowers in the 5 gallon buckets I had with me. A week later the husband came and asked If they could dig more trees. I just laughed and asked what was so hard about that.

Re: Good Neighbors.
I admit I didn't see him do it, but no one else lives anywhere near the tree. He just moved in a while back.
I'll get around to talking to him when the weather breaks. I will handle it diplomatically, depending on his attitude. One thing you learn at my age, is it don't pay to get mad. Nobody cares except you.

Re: Good Neighbors.
The neighborly thing would have been to walk over and discuss it with you. At this point I'd give him an opportunity to replace the tree in a timely manner, if he does not comply then replant the tree yourself and bill him for the tree and your labor. If nothing else, it will send a message that he needs to respect boundaries...

A question I have is did he flat out cut it clear to the ground? Did he have the courtesy to at least cut it up? Was it just cut, felled, and left there? Or did he just cut off some branches? Also, I'm thinking of like a 15-20' tree with a 6-8" trunk... or was this a young 10' tree with a 2-3" trunk? Just curious how ballsy they were based on actual tree size

Re: Good Neighbors.
Also, if you want to be an evil a-hole, which I've been known to be at times... you can politely ask them why they cut down the tree you and your grandson had planted for arbor day. He cried for days because his tree had been destroyed. To stop him from crying you promised to help him plant 3 new trees in it's place.
Yes, I am that evil and I would tell them that and actually plant the trees.

Re: Good Neighbors.
I try not to get into fist fights with the neighbors anymore. I just have my wife go over. Usually does the trick.

Re: Good Neighbors.
Well ... Before you buy him a pie and complement his prowess with a saw while your handing him his appreciation award , I'd smack the living Snizzle out of him! while dragging him by the ear to the scene of the crime . Slap a shovel in his hand and tell him to start digging the old roots out in preparation for the NEW tree he's going to plant ! He'd be lucky I wasn't kicking his butt while he was digging ! Idiot's like this need a reality check . Not a cooling off period before you talk to him about trespassing and destruction of personal property . He's lucky he's not my neighbor cutting my trees because just like you I have access to a backhoe and land .
Bob ?, Nope haven't seen Bob for a while ...Why ? |

Hey buddy if you think the tree bothered you wait until it warms back up some. Just bought 30 hogs and gonna build a pen right where that tree isn't anymore.

Re: Good Neighbors.
I had a similar situation when I was a kid living with my parents. my brother and I came home and saw my parents taking branches from our mulberry tree to the curb. my brother went into the back and saw the neighbor had cut the tree down and thrown everything into my parents yard. it hung over a little and could have been nicely trimmed if they had asked. we loved the berries but these neighbors were assholes and felt it ok to come through our gate into the farthest corner of the yard and cut our tree to pieces. my brother has a very short fuse and my parents knew he would blow up so they lied and said they let them even though we knew it was bs. so he said fine and all thwarted carrying pieces and limbs to the curb well not my brother he was last one to grab and he grabbed a 6 inch round 12 inch long threw it over the fence and threw there back picture window. all you heard was the glass break and the guy scream GOD DAMN IT!!!. he called the cops trying to have my brother arrested. the cop looked the guy dead in the face and said you trespassed and cut down there tree way past the fence line, you deserve that broken window. lets just say they finally sold and moved within the next year.
