Post Tool ?

Are the balljoint tools you rent from autozone or O'reilly's worth it or should I buy a kit. I dont want to use a cheap mickey mouse POS that will break or not do the job right. I don't mind spending some cash for one of those kits like harbour freight has but I need it right now. Dont want to wait for shipping etc..

Check this out... Went to autozone to get a balljoint/remover/installer press tool. The counter help comes back with a pickle fork. I tell him no I don't need that cause I already used mine to seperate them from the spindle. I need the press clamp looking thing. And I even point to it on the tool placemat picture thing so he knows what I'm talking about. He says you can only put them in with that not use itr to press the old ones out. Say What MF. From what I've been told here it's the tool to use for the job.I'm right aren't I. So he wants to argue about it and the manager is the only other person there and he's stocking stuff and says he's not sure.I ain't got time for that so I'm going somewhere else. To top it all off the counter guy has a 82 or so GMC out in the lot thats all lifted and sweet looking but he doesn't know $hit about anything. Whats up with these people, all the good stores in town for auto stuff closed down. Don't even have a napa store. AAAARRRRGGHHHHHHH idiots.

My head is going to explode. I went to harbor freight and got the three in one balljoint kit. Looks exactly like the one your link shows minus a few things. Mine has the clamp, two adapters that fit over the rings and the three different sized tubes. I just tried to fit it over the ball joint but there is not enough room to put the both adapters on each end of the screw and the tube on the bottom. Maybe the jaw width isn't wide enough I'll go measure. Now I feel like an idiot. hehehe

Thats the one I got. Can't make it fit though. The lower balljoints are moog so they must have been replaced but that wouldn't make a difference because they would be the same size/height.Or would it.I don't know much about suspension on these trucks but thanks for being patient and helping me out.

Yeah the jaw width is just under 6 1/2 inches and I cant fit everything in it to press the joint out. Btw the big ring goes under the joint so I would be pressing the the stud down and the joint pops out the bottom right? I went to a hardware store to get a shorter piece of pipe same diameter but no luck any ideas? maybe bigger/wider jaw? thanks

The bottom of the joint or the a arm. If I heat the joint it expands and would be harder to pound out? Won't I chance it by causing cracks in the arm maybe I dunno. This sucks something so easy turns out to be a pain in the a$$

Are the rivets still in the ball joint? These joints are typically eay to remove. Just knock them out with a hammer. If necessary heat the metal around the joint(not the joint or the housing) and knock it out.

Alls good now. I finally got the lower balljoints out by taking them to a machine shop. The 3in1 tool from harbour freight didn't work or should I say didn't fit.The shop guy said it would be near impossible to do it with that type of press anyway. Got the same opinion from some others too. Thanks for everyones help and advice.

No need to apologize 68swb not your fault. Nothing lost but a little bit of time. I was thinking maybe there could be some kind of supplement manual thaT members could help write by submitting tips and tricks that people know of or learned while working on their trucks. Stuff that the manuals leave out or things only pros with years of knowledge would know. That might be a bit much to tackle but worth a shot. But I guess this forum is about the same thing I just described.

the press I used was I think a mac or snap on..but my buddy who owned it said he had to buy it specifically with attachment to do 4x4 ball joints...this may be something to keep in mind if you are buying one..also its best to use an air gun..mine where the originals from a 78 truck that saw use in the rust belt of canada its whole like and they came out and went in with no problems. dunno what brand or model his press was though.
