1/2 ton to 3/4 ton coils

I have a 1972 chevy 1/2 ton coil spring rear end. Im thinking of lowering my truck about 3 inches but everytime i go to use the truck it sags with any thing in it so i was wondering if it is possible or worth my time to put 3/4 ton coils into my truck?

I saw some overload springs for a coil spring rear; those might work but I can not remember where I saw them. If I see them again I'll pass on the word.

you could install some load assist airbags from a company such as Firestone.

that way when your bed is empty your ride is not rough from a stiffer spring rate

Re: 1/2 ton to 3/4 ton coils

hello...this is my first post, but not new to classic suburbans.....

my dad had a 72 suburban (his first burb....he's on his 3rd, an '87 2wd now) back in the 80's. it was a 1/2 ton 2wd custom deluxe with all the extras.

in '83 when he bought the truck the rear coils were sagging and the following year we bought a 71 holiday trav'ler 23 footer....very heavy camper. he put 3/4 ton coils on the back instead of just swapping out for new 1/2 ton springs. even with that heavy camper the overload springs never engaged.

i will say it sat like a hot rod afterwards (tail high) but i like that, especially on a truck or any vehicle that will see a trailer load or whatever. i just hate when people put leveling kits on their trucks or drop the rear to level it...it makes the back end appear low.

i am in the process of buying an almost mint 72 3/4 ton suburban 2wd (reason for joining this club now) and even with the heavy duty front springs, it still has that high rear stance which is great because i will be putting beefing it up for heavy trailer towing duties. my family still has that '71 holiday after 25 years.

i need to get a template so i can mount the teardrop roof lamps from my dad's 72. we found the truck in a junkyard a couple years after my dad sold it. the cab lamps were about the only thing worth saving because the nice interior, tinted glass, tilt column and all the other goodies had been stripped. it was a very sad day....but atleast i will have a classic burb to do all the heavy work when my dad downsizes his 87 is succumbing to rust after being in maine for 10 years....it was originally a texas truck but as we have long known, vehicles don't last forever up here unless you garage them and keep them out of the winter snow and salt.

I think classic performance has a rear coil that will lower 4 inches and still tow with it for the burb and trucks
