Cheyenne Super Suburban?

Ok, so I don't think they ever mad a Cheyenne Super Suburban. But has anyone ever thought about doing one? The trim would be hard, but since my black paint from the few repop pieces I have is flaking off I thought it might be neat to have it custom painted like wood trim? Or has anyone made the wood stick em that looks halfway decent yet? Possibly a veneer of some type? Ideas??

Am I really the only one that has ever considered this?

Re: Cheyenne Super Suburban?

I thought about doing it to mine. I decided to make mine look original instead. It would be really cool to do I think.

Re: Cheyenne Super Suburban?

I think the only really hard parts would be the lower exterior wood trim and the 3rd and fake 4th door raised wood panels since they are smaller than the front doors. Would be easier on a pre '71 since the door panels are similar to the front and could probably be made easier. You would have to get it all done at the same time for it to match, and you couldn't use stock stuff because of the longer side of the suburban and the shorter 3rd door. I wonder how much someone would charge to airbrush the wood look on the trim. Of course you would have to get them to airbrush all the wood trim so it looks the same, unless they are really good at matching, or unless you could find a really good veneer to work with.

Re: Cheyenne Super Suburban?

You are way overthinking this. The easiest Cheyenne Super to build as a Suburban would be a 71. It used the narrow wood trim at the top. This should be easily transferable to the third and blank door panels. Then it is a matter if you want to continue them onto the inner rear quarter trim panels or not. The exterior lower trim woodgrain is just a vinyl and a close reproduction is available by the roll. The biggest issue will be the belt molding that was included in the Cheyene Super on pickups and needed if you want to paint it in the Deluxe Two-Tone paint so often found on Supers. A little mixing, trimming and matching of pickup parts should solve that problem. At one time I had thought out a K20 72 Cheyene Super panel truck. But in the end without the Deluxe Two-Tone, as I'd prefer, it just wouldn't look right.

Re: Cheyenne Super Suburban?

I seem to remeber being able to buy that wood grain material for those side mouldings. I was talking with Hartrob about the upper trim because his truck has it and he had some made up (mar-k i believe but don't quote me). I think it would be not to bad to replicate. The only thing would be making the endgate look proper. I sure like the cheyenne super trucks they are my altime favorite trucks but have not had the pleasure of owning one yet.

Re: Cheyenne Super Suburban?

That would be easy using a '71, but my suburban is a '72. The door panels would be significantly harder to replicate. Especially since the rear door panels are different sizes and shapes than the front ones. With the window cranks and door handle being in different locations too. The vinyl trim is cheap looking, and not quality enough to use on a daily driver, so I would look for something a little more substantial. I thought about the upper trim and Hart_rod made some for his suburban, so that's not a biggy. I think the door panels for the second row would be the really hard part. The rear inside side trim would be an interesting thing to add the wood trim to.

I would love to see those if you have them. For the back door ( and false door)?

Re: Cheyenne Super Suburban?

If you want to trade door panels to try and pull off the 71 look like Tim suggested, let me know. A PO took out the 72 panels out of my 72, and replaced them with the 67-71 panels. They are covered in black fabric right now, but I would imagine that would be easy to reverse. I'm stuck looking for a set of rear panels when it comes time to restore haha.

Re: Cheyenne Super Suburban?

Nate,
Thank you for the kind offer. I think I want to figure out a way to stick with the '72 door panels. Besides, if I change door panels I have to change window regulators too. The '72 window regulators are longer than the '67-'71 window regulators.

Wood grain panels were available on some 72 custom deluxe burbs. Joesjunk has them on his bronze 4wd.

Re: Cheyenne Super Suburban?

Thank you for taking the time to post a pic! That's exactly what I'm thinking of. I've never seen one before. Are they really hard to come by? Have you ever seen a complete set in a suburban?

Re: Cheyenne Super Suburban?

Man, that is exactly what I'm looking for. I'm going. To have to work on finding a set. I have always loved a Blue and White longbed Cheyenne super. For some reason the shortbeds in blue and white don't appeal to me quite as much as the longbeds. Now that I've taken the plunge with the 6.2 and making the suburban my true daily driver I would really like to make it a blu and white Cheyenne super. It's already blue, but will need rocker repair (just starting to bubble) and a respray in the next couple of years. I'm thinking something similar to hart_rod's upper truck trim on his suburban. I've got a few other ideas too. I may have to ask you later for some measurements of those inserts if I can't find any. They are thin metal, I may be able to press some myself. It would also make my power window dilemma easier. if I cut down the raised part of the stock door panel behind the window crank for the power window switch to sit flush it makes the opening bigger than the switch and trim. Thank you again for the pictures!

Re: Cheyenne Super Suburban?

Absolutely!! That would be my ultimate, a 4 door burb. Kind of like what rockcrwln built before he shortened it to a tahoe and sold it. I would have sold a kidney to buy it if it was still a suburban when he sold it. I contacted him to possibly add a 4th door to my burb, but he's too busy with life and other projects right now to tackle it. With 4 kids the 4 th door would be nice.
