'89-91 power mirror upgrade....coming soon to this thread.

just a teaser for now....

I upgraded from standard stainless steel mirrors to the power mirror option (RPO CODE D48) on my '90 suburban a couple of years ago. I will be upgrading them later this week and will present a complete write up on what I am doing and where I got the parts to do it. But for now let's just say it's going to entail a bit more wiring and one more switch. Then things are going to be "flashing hot".

Re: '89-91 power mirror upgrade....coming soon to this thread.

It's a fair bit of a job, I just did the conversion on my '91 Sub a few months ago.

Might be easiest to grab the entire front doors off a donor if you're planning some paint work, otherwise you've got to drill new mounting holes, patch the old ones, swap the reinforcing plates from a power-mirror truck, etc.

Swapping the door wiring is also a pain, you need to pull the rubber boots out and GM somehow contrived to rivet those things in, so you're in there with a grinder in a flex-head Dremel tool grinding off the rivets.

Then there's swapping the dash wiring harness to get the mirror wiring...

As I said in my original posting, I've already done the upgrade to power mirrors a few years ago but am getting ready to upgrade yet again from the standard power mirrors to something better without losing the look of the factory power mirror option. It's gonna be hot and you will know which way to turn too.

Oh, sorry...guess you're putting turn signals in the mirrors or something

The upgrade I'd really like to see is a mirror setup that used one-piece glass, but with the mirror mounted in a 3in or so filler at the front of the sail area, with the glass spaced back accordingly (which would also fix the hinge-clearance problems with the onepieceproducts one-piece window setup.)

Re: '89-91 power mirror upgrade....coming soon to this thread.

Do you need to swap the reinforcing plates? Anyone have photos of these?

I have a set of power mirrors, but not the original doors or plates. Would a home made plate work the same to distribute the weight?

I am curious, what does the mirror switch look like for these vehicles?

It's a rectangular black bezel canted back at about a 30-degree angle, with a black stalk in it,that fits at the very front of the woodgrain (or whatever) strip on the door panel. Twist the stalk to select left/right mirror, then up/down/in/out as usual.

I wanna know what the actual mirrors look like. Are they still the big chrome mirrors and just have power mirrors in them or are they completely different?

Re: '89-91 power mirror upgrade....coming soon to this thread.

Ok well here goes. I've been wanting to find a way to get heated mirrors installed on my suburban for a while now. I stumbled upon a websight for muth mirrors (pronounced MOOTH) at www.kwmuth.com and saw that they had power /turnsignal & heated mirrors for astros, and 1992 & newer trucks, blazers & suburbans.
I checked out my mirrors and found 3 mounting screws on the bottom of them that mount the mirror pivot and head to the bracket the mounts to the door itself. Knowing that the mirror heads were the same between my suburban and the newer models and after talking with them , I went ahead and ordered up the following parts from MUTH.

KIT #220-0235-H
HEATED KIT

KIT #200-0221-0
H-MOD

Upgrade Module

They finally showed up last Friday (26th)

This next pic you can see the 3 screws I'm talking about.

Re: '89-91 power mirror upgrade....coming soon to this thread.

I unbolted the heads from the bases on both my original mirrors & the MUTH MIRRORS and swapped them. The MUTH's has an adapter on the main pigtail that has the leads for the heater connected to it so I would have had to drastically change out the ends of my in-door harness from a 4-way connector to an 8 way connector like on the end of the MUTH's. But I discovered a different way to do it.

The '92-'98 mounts...

My original mirrors with the mounts removed....

And the MUTH's with my original mounts attached to them....

In this picture you can see the connector for the power mirror at the bottom of the pic and where it plugs into the adaptor with the 2 leads for the heater.

I cut the heater leads from the adaptor and added the same type of connector to them as what is on the leads for the turn signals as shown in these next 2 pics.
Red/Black wires with white connector = turn signals
Black sheath with 4 leads going to black female connector = power mirror
Double Black leads to white female connector = mirror defroster

So far, I've got the P/S mirror mounted up on the 'burb and the extra wires routed through the boot and the grommet in the P/S sheet metal under the dash.
In order to get the wires through the grommet, I cut an old wire hanger and made a "fishing tool" out of it. I doubled over the end of it and shoved it through the grommet, threaded the leads through the loop one at a time and while holding the grommet with my right hand I pulled the wires through with the fishing tool.

Re: '89-91 power mirror upgrade....coming soon to this thread.

Well I finally came across a major glitch that I didn't even think to check. It seems that the O.E.M. mirrors 4 wire connector on the mirrors themselves are female and the harness is the male end. But on the MUTH MIRRORS, it's a male connector. So it was either dice and splice the mirrors or the harness or salvage the parts I removed earlier and make a double ended female jumper lead. So that's what i did. Had to play around with the wiring for a few minutes until I had it pinned right, First time left went down and right went up, up went left, and down went right. But it's all good now. Next is to finish the turn signal and heater connectors.
