Post Neew power.. but what can I do?

Well, I'm sick of my extreme slowness of my 84 K5. I need to make more torque. I was thinking of maybe beefing a 350 I have sitting in my 87 parts truck. I'm just afraid beefing a 350 even the slightest bit would roast my 700 trans. Is there anything I can do to this SB to make it a bit more powerful, yet not kill my trans? I'm not exactly the best mechanic.. but I can do simple things. If I can work this engine somewhat good, I'll drop it into my 84. So, is it worth dumping money into?
