^^

BINGO!

No need for a 540 for 600hp. Now a 540 is not built with a tall either. You can go up to 598 with a 9.8" deck aftermarket block.

Re: 540ci BBC build

Those 345cc head are a bit big - you can get a crazy deal on a dart or merlin block - I would save up for that.

You have to call him for details- if you look up the name on google - go see what people have to say on the team chevelle site.

Sell them and buy some cheap 320 aluminum heads you will be much happier. A boat guy wanting to upgrade will jump all over those. One of those probably weighs more than two aluminum heads.

Re: 540ci BBC build

It takes alittle work 2 stuff a tall deck with a good induction system in and make room to work on it. I have seen 598 shortblocks for $4800 in a couple adds lately and there using dart blocks with quality parts. I know from previous builds, you can spend way more on less cubes. Either way enjoy your build up. BBC are fun to pedal in and out of

Re: 540ci BBC build

Don't know if you still have your 4" stroke steel crank. But here is what I built.
515 cubic inch after market Dart block standard deck.
4.53 bore JE pistons
4" stroke scat crank
6.385" scat rods
320 cc intake runner aluminum heads
comp custom roller cam 748 lift
Makes lots of power with a 1250 dominator no NOS.
Running 10's in a quarter mile drag boat.
Nice thing about it is I used my crank and rods from my old 468 to build it.

Fulton builds an 870 CI. Kasse builds 820 CI. I believe Sonny's now builds 1000 CI. There are 500 CI small blocks out there, might as well call a 540 a small engine these days. Gonna need a couple turbos on our 540" engines just to keep up now. Lol

Re: 540ci BBC build

i'll throw one more vote out there for a 496 if using stock block. very reliable street engines with good torque. i'm actually building one with 781 heads for our 68 Camaro project. then i like 540's if using a dart block. hate to see people take a new block and bore em to the max right off the bat
