Pick my cam ?

I just bought a low compression 350 (78-79) that I am going to transplant into my 68 C10 . It will be backed by a th400 and 3.08 gears with 235 75 15 tires. I am looking for a smooth idle with good low end torque as that is where it will be used most. Let me know your experienced suggestions.

I'm no cam expert but to my knowledge the type of cam that makes heavy vehicles like these trucks (with a small block) great around town is a cam that uses 'lift' instead of 'duration' as its backbone.
The 'lumpy' cams (long duration) tend of offer poor low end performance on a heavy vehicle....and that means most of your stoplight 'around town' performance which might be 90% of your day.

Get some info on this...and always take the time to call a cam company and get their opinion.
Be very wary of the guys pushing for the 'lumpity lump' sound....lol

Call the cam makers. They kind of know cams pretty well, probably better than most of us on this forum. ;-)

I agree with Captain and use that cam too. But my question to you is if it's really worth installing a new nearly stock cam into an old engine. I don't know your budget, but killer exhaust would be a great investment too, and you won't have to disturb the karma" of a good used motor. These days, with oil being what is, I am always concerned about flattening a lobe on break-in, then the motor is done.

I've used the Comp 260HE many times and it's great for me. A set of longtube headers and a quick advance kit in the distributor and it will be the best it's going to be without better heads and more compression !

I just ordered this cam kit on Friday for my kid's Jimmy. Going to add it to the original longblock. Changing the oil pump to a M55A along with a double roller chain. Then a Peformer intake with a Q-jet on top and a set of 'vette 2 1/2" rams horns.

I was looking at cams in the Summit catalog and coincidentally this is almost IDENTICAL to one of the Edelbrock Performer cams.

The Comp 260 is a great cam as well as the Crane Energizer 266 (these cams are almost identical.) I would have done the 266 for the kids truck but Energizer cam and lifter kits ain't $89 anymore. The Crane was as expensive as the Comp. The near $100 savings on the Summit kit went towards the intake on our project. Budget, you know.

The Summit 1102 IS the exact same cam as the Edelbrock Performer cam. The Performer cam is just a old school generic cam that has been used for decades.

They have tweaked the advertised numbers in the catalog ever so slightly to make them look different. But that is exactly what I figured it was.
