Re: L29 454 Build for '63 K15 with NV4500

I guess its time for a little update. My laptop screen went out a while back so Ive been doing everything on my phone until I could get enough money to fix the LT. Good news is that I guess I got the extended warranty which covered the repair. Wish I remembered that a month ago.

I think that I left off at being about to order the cam. Well it came but it was a couple of weeks before I could start jobbing on the build due to work and side jobs. Ill get some pics here on the progress.

Gave the block and crank their first bath then got to the assembly. I think I lost some pics of the lower end going together but thats pretty boring anyway. Once I got the measurements for ring gap, crank thrust and rod side play figured out, it went together pretty fast.

I have never degreed a cam since I had didn't have the set up to do it. The instructions that came with my cam said that "it must be degreed in". So I used the money that I thought was needed to fix the laptop and got a Comp degree kit and a Cloyes HexAjust single roller timing chain. It took a little while to figure out the numbers on the cam card but in the end, all if the cam timing events and lift numbers were right on the money!

Re: L29 454 Build for '63 K15 with NV4500

For the oil pump, I used a Melling standard pressure / standard volume pump and an ARP pump shaft that eliminates the little plastic collar thing. Ive always used a HV pump but my machinist said it wasn't needed. So standard pump it is. The cast timing cover and one piece oil pan gasket were a nice treat too.

Re: L29 454 Build for '63 K15 with NV4500

Today I got up early and wire brushed the balancer in prep for paint. Got it painted early and let it dry all day. Was going to buy a new one but figured I could save around 100$ here.

While it was drying, I cleaned both the upper and lower halves of the intake manifold. Let me tell you, its no joke! I cleaned for nearly 6 hours straight using a foil baking pan and Chemtool Carb Cleaner (the stuff in a 1 gallon can). While the manifold came out pretty clean, it was still pretty dull in finish, so I shot it with some natural aluminum paint that I had around. Looks nicer now.

I was trying to figure out how to paint the degree marks that were stamped on the balancer. Ive always hated not being able to see the marks when the timing light was on them. My second daughter helped me out immensely with this. She used a meat skewer as a paint brush. It came out killar!

My daughter also said that the plain red valve covers weren't going to cut it. They needed to be black. I showed her the 454 HO covers online. She gave her seal of approval on those. LOL

Re: L29 454 Build for '63 K15 with NV4500

A little out of order but still part of the process here. After I did the spring swap on the truck last year, I wasn't going to try to air down the 35s enough to get it in the garage anymore. I kept blowing the beads off of the 16.5s and the guys down at Les Schwab (bless them) were about to kill me when I pulled up for the 3rd time in the same day for a free remount and balance!. I ended up scoring a set of 16" wheels with some decent rollers on them from another member here that was local (Thanks Rick). This guy had the most well put together, bullet proof sleeper of a square body 3500!

With the new wheels on and aired down, the truck went right into the garage without any issue. I might even try out the tall skinny tire thing after all is said and done.

Well thats all for now. Im hoping to get the engines swapped within the week and then its on to start the wiring and fuel system.

Looks great

I did not realize that the stock L29 balancer has degree markings like that.

Yes she is definitely the artist! I racked my brain all day trying to figure out how to paint the marks and within 20 seconds she had it figured out. She asked if I was going to "spruce up" the engine compartment. Im a little afraid of where that might lead with her and that I might no get to drive it for a good while longer than originally thought!

Thanks Captain! Hope you're vacation was great!

I was a little surprised when I wire brushed the balancer and uncovered the marks myself. It seemed to neat of a little detail to leave covered. Weird thing is though... I believe that the distributor is adjusted once to sync the crank sensor and the computer and thats it. The PCM takes care of all of the timing changes after the initial setting.

Re: L29 454 Build for '63 K15 with NV4500

I picked up the flywheel from my machinist Gary today. Before I left, he asked if it was for the L29 that I was building. I said yes and asked why he was asking. He told me that he hadn't seen a 454 FW with as narrow of a contact patch as the one I had. To be honest, I hadn't really noticed it. As we stood there looking at it, I clearly remember the contact patch on the 396 FW extending almost to the crank bolts. He asked if it was a multi disc clutch and I had no idea.

My question to those in the know here. It appears that once I install the 12" clutch and pressure plate, there will only be approximately 1-1/2 to 1-5/8" of contact area for the clutch to contact. Does this seem right or am I using the wrong FW?

Haven't left yet.....Aug 8th.

That's why I was surprised to see the degree marks as it is really not needed on the L29 as far as I know. The PCM takes care of the advance curve.

That flywheel doesn't look right. Where did you get it? Could it possibly be a marine flywheel?

I took a look around for "replacement flywheels" for a 1997 C3500 and came up with the same one. Guess Ill just use it and see if I can run a stock clutch. Just weird and small to me.

Re: L29 454 Build for '63 K15 with NV4500

Thanks Zane. Well I hit a bit of a crossroads this morning. It was dark last night when I got the 396 out so I didn't look around the engine compartment too much. Drinking my coffee and assessing the engine compartment this morning, I realized that I really do need to clean it up right (or as best as I can do) before dropping the L29 in. Im pretty sure that the exhaust manifolds aren't going to line up with the old down pipes, the core support is rusted at the mounting points and collapsing, my brake lines are sketchy at best and after looking at the "Show Us Your Engine Compartments" thread, well I got a little overwhelmed looking at mine.

Im thinking of towing the truck out of the garage into the driveway to give it a real good cleaning and figure out how to approach it. Ill probably rattle can the whole EC as I don't have the knowledge to use the good paint to shoot it with.

Ill put up some more pics later tonight but its got me pretty bummed. I just need to motivate and get this unforeseen issue out of the way so I can get it running again.

396 is out and posing for a picture with its younger bigger brother. This little engine (while Ive had it) has hauled countless tons of building materials, trash, been on numerous camping and dirt bike trips. If only it could talk.

A changing of the guard. Hoping that the L29 will give as many years of service as the 396.

Re: L29 454 Build for '63 K15 with NV4500

The next day, I surveyed the engine compartment. Its trashed. I knew it was always kinda dirty but don't think that a quick degrease is gonna cut it here.
With an empty engine bay, it became real clear that the brakelines were hammered, wiring need attention and the big surprise - the core support is rusted and collapsing on both sides where it sits on its mounts.

Question - Im going to try to find a good used core support because I have a feeling it will fit better than an aftermarket one. Anyone here use an aftermarket one with good results?

Re: L29 454 Build for '63 K15 with NV4500

One bright spot I found yesterday is that the engine paint almost perfectly matches the paint that the PO had sprayed on the truck but without the metal flake. Here is one of the valve covers sitting on the fender where the paint isn't oxidized. Pretty close eh? Certainly not part of my plan. I got luck there.

Im thinking of using this paint to at least do the firewall. Im on the fence about an al one color EC but it might look cool? Id like to look into parkerizing all of the hardware that holds all of the sheetmetal together as well.

Re: L29 454 Build for '63 K15 with NV4500

Tonight, I should be wrapped up with the engine or at least have it buttoned up. An interesting thing that I found out about the GEN 6 engine's "net lash" valve adjusting system is that it uses 3/8" studs (or bolts) to secure the rocker arms. This was not a problem since Comp Cams makes a "kit" that gives the L29 and adjustable valve train by installing a 7/16 rocker stud top and threads into the head using a 3/8 - 16 on the other end. No problem right? My epiphany came after I had already installed the heads and lower plenum. My STI cam kit came with 3/8" pushrods. "Thats good" I thought to myself. Then I realized that the stock PRs were 5/16. So I tried to order 3/8 guide plates with 3/8 stud holes. After calling everywhere that I could think of (Straub, my machinist, Comp, Summit, Jeggs etc) I figured that I had 2 choices. Either run the 7/16 GPs that Straub sent me and pull the heads, have them machined for 7/16 studs OR keep the heads on, make some 14 ga steel spacers to fit inside of the mounting holes of the GPs and keep the Comp rocker stud kit that I had. Option 2 didn't cost me anything so I went with that. It was a little tedious and the pics really don't show a lot of detail but here it is. 2nd pic shows the gap between the guide plate and a 3/8 bolt. Pic 3 shows the spacer "insert" installed.

Re: L29 454 Build for '63 K15 with NV4500

Quick update. Been busy thrashing on this thing to get it ready for Winter and haven't been able to get on here to show a little progress.

My conscience wouldn't let me put the new purdy engine in the crusty old engine bay, so it got a little sprucing up.

Frame too. I found that duplicator makes a pretty tough and quick drying paint. My neighbors are happy that I'm done with the painting.

Looks good

Yeah I would have to do that as well.

Did you use the DIY4x B52 brackets for your front springs?
