Engine wiring harness identification help needed - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Well, my old harness has been out for a real long time and I am trying to figure out with the help of my manuals where each wire goes.

Here are the pics of both parts of the engine harness. One harness is set up for a new style 1 wire alternator.

I believe the wires go to these things:

1 ground
2 ground
3 horn
4 headlights
5 front turn or side marker
6 front turn or side marker
7 alternator plug
8 also for the alternator alternator ?
9 ground maybe
10 junction block on fender
11 junction block on fender
12 front turn or side marker
12a front turn or side marker
13 headlights
14 ground
15 distributor
16 appears to be for the oil pressure idiot light
17 starter posts
18 transmission - back up lights
19 temp sending unit
20 master brake cylinder
21 appears to be for the TSC

Other than the ones that I don't know, does it look like I have it figured out? Thanks for any help.

It looks like you pretty well have it figured out. Here is what the other terminals look like to me: 7) Alternator plug

16) Oil pressure light sender

21) Wiring for TSC

I don't think my 69 uses the TSC so I guess I ignore that.

For 16, I guess you mean that in addition to the mechanical oil pressure gauge there should be a light on the dash for loss of oil pressure?

It's funny, it was a bit overwhelming when I was looking at the stuff last night but this morning when I took it with me to work to photograph it, it didn't seem that bad. Won't be getting to get it installed tonight, maybe some free time in the next few days.

I wasn't planning on having an idiot light for the oil - I keep a good eye on the oil pressure gauge, hope that isn't a mistake not to have an idiot light in addition to the oil pressure gauge.

Got the gauges wired up a few nights ago. I did have to move the speedo to the other side, forgot about how the speedo cable is routed.

I used the # 21 for a underhood light.(just turn ing. switch to ass.)

Yukon,

That is a good way to look at wiring harnesses. Your pics are very good and numbering the ends breaks it down so that the harness is understandable.

Assuming things are correctly identified maybe the pic and identification should go into the FAQ.

Rollie396 - the gauges are AutoMeter's Phantom series. I'm really liking how they look with the silver interior and black dash pad and bezel.

Yukon,

Putting the pics and description into the FAQ's would be a good thing to do. Questions on harnesses come up all of the time and it is easier to understand than a schematic.
