1978 P10 Fuel Tank

I have a 1978 P10 Step van. The fuel tanks are located in between the frame rails are are just behind the rear axle. I have patched the tank twice and now the sending unit is starting to go. This is an very odd tank and sending unit which are not available any more. If you search online they are showing the long side mount tanks. Has anyone found a good replacement tank? or know any options? Maybe someone who has built one.

Thanks in advance
Travis

I should have noted Mill Supply is the first place I always check. They do not carry anything that works for fuel tanks. Thanks

Re: 1978 P10 Fuel Tank

When I look up a 1979 P30, I get back results for a between the frame rails style tank, 30 gallons. They look just like the Blazer/Suburban tanks from 73-87 trucks but the filler neck seems unique to the P series.

Searches for an 1982+ P30 show a 40 gallon tank also, if you are needing the capacity.

The P10 is a whole different animal. The between the rails are for school bus. mine is somewhere between 16 and 20 gals.

Re: 1978 P10 Fuel Tank

What’s the dimensions of the tank?

L = 29.5”
W = 21.250”
H = 9.250”

So you have a local speed shop the drag cars buy from? Seeing how the fuel neck sounds like a custom weld on anyways, maybe a fuel cell is the way to go? It won't be $100 but won't be $700 either...

It is roughly 19.5" x 27" x 10"

The Rail to rail is the 27"

Re: 1978 P10 Fuel Tank

I have a 73 P10, so I’ll look tonight to see if my tank looks anything like that. The dimensions I gave was from a 53 Belair tank that had a very similar design.

I checked my p10 and same design. I have a 1965 International Metro Mite shorty van. Let me see what that tank looks like.

Re: 1978 P10 Fuel Tank

For what it's worth, I ordered this blazer tank after reading online that guys had success with it fitting a P10. I wanted the TBI tank as I'm doing an LS swap and wanted to use an intank pump. (This TBI era tank has a bigger hole to accept the in-tank pump set-up). Anyways my builder said it's bigger than my original P10 tank. Shame on me for not measuring myself.

I see your tank measurements are smaller than this tank. Do you have a 7 foot floor P10 as I do. Maybe these tanks are unique to our trucks?

Re: 1978 P10 Fuel Tank

Mine is a 8ft floor. I can fit 10ft conduit in there that stops at the foot rest.
