Re: Military Vets sign in.
I am not a vet, but it is one of the regrets I have in life. I was very short sighted as a kid.
On my moms side and two of my brothers there are a lot of Air Force vets. On my wifes side there are a few Army vets. One of my nephews is about a year and a half into his Air Force stint. Really disliked it at first, but every time I talk to him it seems he's more and more in to it. His brother is in Navy boot camp as I write this. Some of his letters home are hilarious ... " I don't have much time, I have to get back to my beatings" He was accepted in to the Navy Nuclear program, not an easy program to be accepted to, Im very proud of him. |

Re: Military Vets sign in.
20 years, two weeks, and two days USN [regular and reserve]
89-95 Fleet 95-03 Bees 03-09 NCW long boring list of deployments, been to most of Uncle Sam's better parties visited a lot places I was shocked to see anyone choosing to live and others I was envious.. serving in three major Navy elements, two in the NECC, gave me a lot of exposure I never could have experienced elsewhere.. killer bee was my radio handle, I was very involved in weapons handling, armory supervisor at retirement.. I rode out the last 12 years as a CM1, too hard headed and often extremely narrow or closed eligibility for chief.. although I would have liked to promote further, no regrets whatsoever, NONE! my reputation among the men and women I served with is worth more than anything sewn on my sleeve.. training and experience in my trade in the Navy paved the way to a very prosperous civilian career as well.. my CMC handed me an engraved cutlass on behalf of the goat locker at my retirement.. close friend of mine is an Army Combat Engineer Officer.. we served together a few times and he made this for my retirement..

Re: Military Vets sign in.
Please, All you NON-Vet Military people, like me, sound off. I'm retired but don't meet the MQ to be a vet. Never served 180 consecutive days on active duty. There are thousands of people that served 6 and 8 years yet do not have a day set aside to honor them for their duty.

August '68 spent 6 days "on line" just outside the Czechoslovakia border when Russia invaded. Pretty tense time for a 19 year old from the flat lands of Kansas. NATO thought Russia was starting up for WW3 and we had a front row seat. Issued 120 rounds live ammo to each for M-14s, loaded the Huey gun ships with M2 50 cal MGs, M-60 MGs, 2.75 rockets. M113 & M114 Tracked Vehicles, M-60 tanks, the whole lock, stock and barrel. Watched Russian tanks rolling in the streets thru binoculars and could see and hear the main guns from the tanks firing. Wow, memories made that week.

Re: Military Vets sign in.
I spent a lot of time at Graf and Hohenfels. Tennaloe was right out side of my concern. I also did several border tours, month at a time. I went out there at night.

Re: Military Vets sign in.
I was stationed in Baumholder (on the Rock) in the 1/13th infantry 8th ID but never trained in Baumholder, they always road marched us to Graf and Hohenfels. Go figure.
It's funny, I have a hard time calling myself a vet. It's weird, it's like I was on some sort of adventure vacation. Yes some of it was annoying, but for the most part, I drank beer with my friends trained... which was off roading for me. I drove a 1/4 ton (jeep) the whole time I was in Germany, all you had to do was ask for parts and they gave them to you. They loved me, most drivers were lame and didn't know how to work on stuff. The maintenance guys loved me, one less thing for them to work on. I traveled all over Europe, drinking and having a blast. The Army loved me, I worked and loved to worked on the 1/4 ton. My favorite places to hang were Sachsenhausen and Heidelberg. I had an even better deal at Fort Irwin! (203rd MI and 6/31th Infantry 7th ID) Desert off road... my wheel house as a kid! But I'll spare you all the verbiage. Fun!!! I got out and went to College on the VEAP. Another sweet deal! I didn't have to suffer combat, I got lucky. I tip my glass, to those lost and those suffering the physical and metal damage of standing in front. j
