Question 14 Bolt 10.5" Full-Floater Rebuild

Does anyone know of a thread of a how-to rebuild a 14 bolt ff? I tried ser hing but that didn't work out worth a crap. I beed to rebuild, add a locker and regear my 14 bolt. I want to do it myself but would like a guide. Also, i want to add a rear locker, been thinking of a detroit true-trac, is it locked my axle-shafts full time? This will be more off road than onroad... Ler the advice begin!!

Re: 14 Bolt 10.5" Full-Floater Rebuild

Just keep in mind, it looks much easier than it really is.

There are relatively few parts inside them, mechanically they are very simple. But the setup is no joke, it really does need to be that precise. You cannot just slap it together, you really do need to take the time and all the measurements, yes with a proper dial indicator, and get it exact.

Thankfully, the 14-Bolt is a little more forgiving than other axles, with threaded bearing preloads and such, but it still requires attention to detail (EXACT DETAIL) to be set up properly.

Just don't make the mistake of thinking "this is simple, there's only a handful of parts inside here". I've known guys to remove and install the carrier five, six, seven times, changing one and two thousandths of an inch, to get the correct gear mesh pattern.

Re: 14 Bolt 10.5" Full-Floater Rebuild

Thank you wilkin for the reminder. I have been reading, and after i disassemble it i could awlays take it to our highschool shop to fix it. They have 1 tech for every 4 kids in a 20 kid class. The tech's know their stuff. Anyway the back end spins good so right now going to just pop the cover off and shafts out see how it looks, redo brakes and seals, but can anyone recommend a good locker? Turning 40" tires on pavement and dirt, and will need to withstand burnouts... Thanks!!
