Re: '67 Stepper "Laymond"

I found mine on a Facebook For Sale Page. Came out of a wrecked Van. Going rate for the 6.0/4L80 setup seems to be in the $2-2500 range. 5.3/4L60 in the $1-2k range. If you look and patient you can find better deals.

Didn't get much done on the truck other than starting interior tear down for some freshening up.

Re: '67 Stepper "Laymond"

Sunday it was finally warm enough to get back out in the garage. Took the interior out last weekend and yesterday started on restoring the gauges and glovebox.

With the seat out, the floor looks real good other than some unnecessary hole cut/drilled and whenever someone repaired the cab corners they riveted a plate over the seat belt holes. Not sure what I'm going to do about that.

The gauges are basically done. Tore the cluster down, cleaned everything real good, painted the needles florescent orange, cleaned the plastic with Meguiar's headlight restore kit, and re-painted the silver on the bezel. Not a perfect job but didn't feel like putting too much time/money into it since I will be changing them out when the 6.0 goes in. Turned out decent I think.

The silver on the glovebox is painted. Waiting for the paint to "cure" for a few days before painting the black.

If I can make up my mind how I'm going to do my stereo, I will order it this week. I don't want to cut the dash so I'm looking at alternatives. Leaning towards using Massive Audio's EQM EQ with USB input as a pre-amp, a 4-channel Rockford Fosgate Punch amp to (2) Punch 6x9s in the door (already cut or would not be going this route), and (2) Punch 4"s in the stock dash location. Planning on a adding some 8"s whenever I move the fuel tank to the back. Once I find a factory AM/FM tuner or period correct 8-track I want to install that in the dash, add a speaker/line-level converter and hook it up to the EQ as my FM Tuner input.

I'm also looking at Clarion's marine CMS2 setup and either leave the controller under or on the seat. Then I would just use the radio delete plate or install an AM radio for looks.

On with the pics:

You and me both!

Hoping to have all my interior pieces painted this weekend. Gauges and glovebox are done. Dash and seat begin tomorrow.

I think I decided on how I'm going to do my stereo. Unfortunately the head unit I want is currently not available. Hoping it does soon because I would rather run the stereo wires before I reinstall the rest of the interior.

Thank you and I may. I'm trying to keep or obtain all the '67 only parts I can. Next up are the window cranks.

Re: '67 Stepper "Laymond"

Had a pretty good weekend. Spent Friday night out in the garage, Saturday morning I went to an auction, and then the rest of the day/evening out in the garage.

The auction was pretty cool. It was held by a widow whose late husband had passed. He had a one-man garage that opened in 1936. A lot of neat stuff including a 1970 lwb c10 with 44k orig. miles. The downside is it brought in every American Picker watcher within a 100 mile radius. Everything I wanted couldn't be touched within twice what its real value should have been. I walked out with nothing but had a good time. The truck sold for $5k with only one bidder. About the best deal of the day I saw.

The weather Saturday was nice enough to where I could keep the garage at a nice 70-75 degrees without running the heaters constantly so I decided to get some painting done. Painted the dash, finished the glovebox, started on my engine pieces, and dyed my seat.

Painted the dash. Went to the local paint supply place and they mixed some 514 Red in a spray can. Turned out pretty good.

I'm actually quite proud of the seat. I traded for the bench last October and other than being dirty and maroon, it was quite nice. I didn't like it in the truck so I decided it needed to be black. Purchased some SEM Landau Black and Vinyl Prep. Scrubbed the seat down with a brush and Simple Green, applied the Prep, washed with water and sprayed the dye. I used two cans of dye but really need about a half a can to finish it off. Will go get another can tomorrow. My only complaint is the cans have a tendency to splatter. I compensated by painting a bout a foot past both sides of the bottom seat and constantly wiping the tip off. If I had it to do all over I would have hung the bottom seat. Overall I think it turned out great and hopefully it will last. It is only temporary until I get my other seat redone in houndstooth.

Getting close to tying up all the odds and ends and then its suspension time!

On with the pics:

Dash before

Dash after

Seat progression

I applied another coat after this pic but didn't take a pic.

Parts awaiting installation

Re: '67 Stepper "Laymond"

Finally ordered my stereo components today. That and some odds and ends from So Ky Classics should arrive at work tomorrow. Can't wait!

Made a disturbing discovery the other night while trying to rid the doors it its power windows and locks. Apparently when a PO made the conversion they decided to cut the inner door skins to get the window motors in. Now I don't think the manual regulators will fit without modification. So I guess I need to decide if I want to weld in a patch or look for better '67 doors.

Here's my discovery:

Wheweeeee! That stinks. If the doors fit well and are original, I'd patch it.

Re: '67 Stepper "Laymond"

Been making some forward progression. I'm about sick of sanding, I do know that. I really want to buy a sandblasting cabinet but I don't want to a) cut into my truck budget and b) afraid when I do get one all my parts will already be sanded and painted. Still probably going to get one.

The seat is done and looks great.

All my stereo equipment is here except the headunit. It should be available in April. In the mean time I'll just run it straight off my phone.

Going to put in a solid week of work into it and hopefully should be driveable again by the weekend. We will see.

Re: '67 Stepper "Laymond"

Another cool pic I have to share. My cousin sent it to me this morning via text. My uncle had a copy made for me and will be framed for my office at home.

This is my grandpa in 1967 standing next to his truck. I knew he bought a '67 new but was under the impression that it was a longbed fleetside. To my surprise it appears to be a short stepper with white bumpers.

My decision is definitely made up now and will giving the truck the full white trim treatment. Also helped me decide on whether or not to paint the roof white. Will leave it red now.

The more the merrier!

I'm actually from Owensboro. If you look at the door closely on my grandpa's truck is says "Newman, KY". Its a small town on 60 between Henderson and Owensboro. I used to spend my summers in Newman but lived with my mom and went to school in Evansville.

Re: '67 Stepper "Laymond"

Had a pretty productive weekend. Spent Friday night out in the garage watching basketball and installing my stereo. Sounds pretty decent for running straight off my phone via the headphone jack. I now know where all my rattles are in the doors.

Saturday was spent out in the yard. I've been clearing out the back part of the yard towards the woods and got a good 6 hours in of burning wood and brush.

Sunday was again spent out in the garage watching basketball (Go Cats!). Cleaned the garage pretty good and got most of the interior back in. I have the windows to do and swap steering wheels and it should be complete...for now.

Here are a couple of pics.

Hello from a fellow Hoosier.
I would leave your trucks paint the way it is and copy the logo from your grandpa's truck door. Now that the inside is cleaned up you need to work on cleaning the bed. I can come over and haul that old gas tank in the bed away for you. Nice truck .

Re: '67 Stepper "Laymond"

Thanks. The contents of the bed is probably worth more than the rest of the truck

I was talking it over with my buddy at work yesterday and that is exactly the plan. Keep the paint the way it is and paint the logo on the doors. Now I just got to motivate him to do it.

The wheels are 18" Riddlers. 8" front w/0 offset. 9" rears w/+6. Tires: front 235/60s and rears 255/55 Bridgestones. Not sure if I'm going to see about a wider tire or step up to 20s. Going to make the decision after it gets aired out.

Not sure on drop. Front is 2" drop spindles and cut stock springs. Rear are lowering springs with 2" blocks. My buddy lowered it before I bought it. The ride sucks and front is too low for a real driver. It looks cool sitting in the garage or parking lot though
