Saginaw 4 speed swap

So I can get a 4 speed Saginaw out of a guys 68 C-10 with a B and M shifter, bell housing, and clutch for $400, he says it runs good with no problems. I know they are not the best manual out there but it would be a pretty cheap swap as opposed to a Muncie or Tremec. Is this a good deal and would it hold up to a 383 stroker? I’ve never dyno’d it but I estimate about 400 hp, currently has a 700r4. Thanks.

Re: Saginaw 4 speed swap

If you drive it more like you are 50 years old than 20 and you don't have any tire under the truck it would probably live. Manuals are a blast no doubt, but you will regret losing your overdrive IMO.

If I was building a beater truck with all Craigslist parts just to see how cheap I could put it together, I'd do it. But I think it's a step backwards from the driveability of you TH700R4 and it's .70 top gear.

Re: Saginaw 4 speed swap

They can handle 'normal driving'. They can tale a little. Think "They can't take what a Muncie performance transmission can" and you'll be fine. I have one I bought with a van shifter (tall/straight) because it was from a van. I paid $175. I figured that was a good price. Not sure what they're worth.

Re: Saginaw 4 speed swap

So I passed on the Saginaw and the guy says he has a M21 he would consider selling. I’m not an expert but I read something about a tall first gear, I have 3:73 rear end, would that work?

Re: Saginaw 4 speed swap

What are your plans for the truck? I defer back to my other post where if you drive on the highway and want to cruise for any real distance, you will miss your overdrive.
