Re: new bagged 79 swb project

got a little sidetracked with getting my cerakoting project up n running, but I did manage to get the sfbd done.... and it now lays pinch without drop spindles

2x4 tube, and I ran some 3/4emt for air lines and electrical, just incase I end up needing to drill into frame later... lines will be protected

laying upside down with plasma trying to make a straightish cut

all burned in with a boxing/fish plate up past my Z

and finally seeing that everything come together.... altitude adjustment complete.

next on the list is getting some motor and trans mounts done, still need to figure out what I want to do with the factory ac box... keep it or ditch it and go vintage air. then once I get the front sorted out... time to move onto the rear.... which from what I can see from the bottom... is a mess.

Re: new bagged 79 swb project

small update.. got my dummy motor and trans in and some mounts built. went with the earlier car style mounts vs the clamshell mounts mainly the simplify the LS swap down the road. super simple trans crossmember which leaves me the most exhaust room.

trans is off the the tranny shop, time to finish up a few details on the front end, and get it painted so I can get it back together and onto other areas

Re: new bagged 79 swb project

got some time today to work on my own stuff.....

first up was to remove this whole mess...

I wanted to do a full back half anyways... sooo adding the extra wheelbase isn't a problem with creative cutting... turns out the notch starts right where I need to start my back half behind the crew cab.... only issue was some floor clearance issues in front of the back seat. I don't sit back there... so a little hump will be just fine.

more pics... will be a much better family cruiser this way.

on a side note...I hate the front wheels having so much neg camber layed out... soooo I ordered drop spindles and will "un drop" the lower arms plus take about .750" out of them, and mod the uppers accordingly. part of the fun with one off stuff I guess

Re: new bagged 79 swb project

spent most of the morning getting the remnants of the old notch boxing plates removed and fixing the pass side rail where they had plated over the shock recess.

then it was onto the start of my simple back half. im goin for the simplest way to have the deepest FLAT sheetmetal floor, still a lot of boxing and fishplating needed, but I can start figuring out my new rear susp. the plan is lots of lift and not much fore/aft movement.

its 2x4x.180, and I set it up 3/8" above the tubes... just enough room for bumpstops.

Re: new bagged 79 swb project

lack of updates because I got sucked into a SEMA thrash for a buddy, but managed to get the rear suspension pretty much done. now that this thing is rolling again, its shop cleaning day.

Killer work!!! I may steal a couple of your ideas when I am able to build a four link on my c10.

Re: new bagged 79 swb project

I didn't want to get overly complicated with the design, truck is meant to be a driver. the whole goal is simple and trouble free. the shock location is the main unknown at this point... and may get changed if it doesn't work very well.

and I managed to use a few parts from the "before"... the upper links used to be the lowers.... while they are VERY overkill for uppers.... I had them.

Re: new bagged 79 swb project

Im at a similar point and I have a choice to make. Since you seem to like the most simple way to get the job done maybe you're the exact one to ask. I want to put my C10's dropmember on a C20 but the frames are different. Do you think its easier to just cut the C10's front clip off with the Dropmember attached and graft it onto the C20's frame or adding to the C10's frame and trying to find the mounting points for the rear cab mounts? Both option I can pull off but I need the fastest solution cause this is a truck I drive everyday...

depends on what the final "plan" is and what gets you that much closer.

mine was a typical "while im at it... I may as well..." kinda deal, but right after I started this project, I ended up with a built LB7 for a driver.... so this is really just a spare time project.... haven't really had a set plan other than wanting it layed flat... the crewcab was simply a free cl score and didn't really push the project backwards from where it was at.

Re: new bagged 79 swb project

not sure why some of the earlier pix are huge, wont let me go back and fix them... gonna try a photobucket with these, see how that works out.

looked all over trying to find decent tank mounting ideas, ended up coming up with this..

and here is the start of my bed floor framework, I ended up gutting the skins off the bed and just starting over... everything will be completely smooth when its finished, and its still 12" deep
